Experimentation, I'd assume. No, that's most likely... the problem is simply that the mostly incompetent scientists holding us hostage aren't using the one thing they're decent at to get useful data, and are instead wasting all of our time with frivolous holiday celebrations that have no real value or meaning.

Most likely it's because they can afford the time to do such celebrations. Or to bring some semblence of 'normalcy' to their lab rats.
