Character name: Jessica Ushiromiya
Fandom: Umineko No Naku Koro Ni
Timeline: Episode 4
Age: 18
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
Jessica's special power is the ability to magically "upgrade" her brass knuckles and her fighting... stats, I guess, through sheer willpower. This was described as "self-augmentation" and it's like someone enchanting their own attacks/weapons to make them stronger. In other words, she can buff herself LOL.
When she fights against Ronove in EP4, the more she fought, the stronger her attacks became. In EP6, when she made a contract with Zepar and Furfur to fight in a love duel, she was able to apply these upgrades herself with no limitations. The upgrades come in levels and different types, like "Armor-piercing upgrade", "flame upgrade", "strength upgrade", etc. These are applied mostly to her fists but a few of them probably apply to her generally like "armor upgrades" or "speed upgrades". The game sort of implies that she can create whatever kind of upgrade she needs at the time, since she created a specific "closed room murder" attack when she couldn't get through a door (it's a bit technical).
What Jessica will actually have coming into Gargleblasted will be the ability to subconsciously buff herself, the longer she fights, based on her willpower and determination, which happened in EP4. These upgrades are based on what Jessica needs at the time: If she needs to move faster, then a speed upgrade. If she needs more punch, a strength upgrade. If she needs to break a barrier, then armor-piercing. She can't determine these herself, but they'll come as she needs them, if that makes any sense. I guess I should specify some logistics for how this actually works in-game, so I'm guessing if she's in a fight thread... I'd say she'd get an upgrade every three of her posts (not counting her opponent's, obviously), to be fair. And again, her fighting has to have a purpose to it or something that makes it worthwhile or it will do nothing, so it won't kick in if she's just sparring for fun.
Oh, and there's also a visual effect when she buffs herself; it looks like a flame enveloping whatever part of her body that she's upgrading, so like red flames around her fists when she's upgrading her strength. And there's no such thing like a "immortality upgrade" or anything cheap like that, cuz while Jessica becomes stronger as she fights, a skilled opponent can still easily kill her (as Ronove did in EP4 LOL) with strategy, which isn't Jessica's strong point.
How would they use their abilities?:
Although Jessica is an impulsive person, she rarely turns to violence unless her hand is forced or she's just really that pissed (like "you killed my father" pissed), so she won't really be going around punching people or picking fights. Jessica herself isn't actually aware of her own abilities by EP4, she just knows that if she keeps punching something, it eventually breaks. Despite her canon often forcing fights to the death, she's not really a fight to the death kind of person and wouldn't kick a man if he's down, if that makes any sense. So long story short, barring weirdass circumstances like the ones her canon presents, I don't see her running around splitting skulls at random.
Eventually, she's probably going to realize she's basically the embodiment of the Rollout attack from Pokemon, so Jessica would use her powers for the FORCES OF GOOD, mostly to protect those she's close to.
Appearance:
Jessica is an attractive blonde woman with a little past shoulder length hair that gets tied up into a ponytail more often than not. She has a slender, toned build and also has a smashing ass and tits, granted to her by the powers that be at Studio DEEN. Her eye color differs depending on the medium, they're dark (brown or black) in the VN, but blue in the anime.
The outfit she was wearing to the family conference is a simple, almost schoolgirish outfit. She wears an oversized purple jacket with the One Winged Eagle embroidered on right sleevem and both sleeves cover everything but the tips of her fingers. Underneath is a white dress shirt with a red tie, and an elegant ruffled skirt that has a scarlet silky piece covering the upper part of the skirt with the red part sticking out underneath. She wears knee high stockings and formal shoes (not quite Mary Janes though), and... really, her outfit looks better in the anime.
Background:
Jessica was born into the rich, glorious and hideously fucked up Ushiromiya family after 12 years of struggling from her parents, Natsuhi and Krauss, to conceive. Krauss, her father, was the firstborn son of Kinzo and expected to succeed his father simply because of that fact. Unfortunately, that meant Jessica was expected to succeed Krauss, or at least marry a guy capable of doing that. Therefore, she was also burdened with the pride and honor of the Ushiromiya family, as well as the expectation that she (and her husband) would lead it one day, so one couldn't say that Jessica's childhood was ideal. While she was treasured by her parents, she was also pressured into studying, manners, leaderships, all qualities that a head should have. Because of this, as Jessica grew up, a wedge was driven between herself and her parents; she especially had a bad relationship with her overbearing mother.
However, Jessica found a safe haven in her life, where she could be “normal”: School. Although she had no love for tests and the like, Jessica adored her social life and came to treasure it. Although her parents meddled time to time by putting themselves in the related parent organizations, she still found time to just hang out with friends and do things that she liked. Jessica also looked forward to the family conference where her beloved cousins gathered, and she also secretly hung out with family servants who were around her age when she had the chance. She also befriended, despite her mother's insistence, a servant named Shannon who was very close to her age and lived on the island like she did, making Shannon a very close friend and confidant, and this is also kind of important for later.
Anyway, at school, Jessica grew to be a social butterfly. Her cousin George described her as someone who could attract people easily because of her personality, and she never had a shortage of friends. However, as Jessica grew up, she naturally began to be interested in the subject of love, and started to gossip about it with her friends and such.
Here is where Jessica's background started to work against her: It seemed like Jessica was more interested in the kind of traditional "love at first sight", "sweep you off your feet" romance and unfortunately for her, a servant who arrived at the island when she was about 16 caught her eye; Kanon, who was Shannon's "brother" of sorts. Kanon was a kid who was close to her age, living on the same island, and was of the opposite sex, meaning that Jessica was smitten almost immediately. Her infatuation with Kanon sort of sabotaged any attempts at romance that she could have otherwise gotten in, since she already had her eye on someone and her social status probably drove off most suitors to begin with. Therefore, Jessica spent a lot of her teenaged years wondering why she couldn't find a boyfriend and being very miserable about it. Things became complicated when Shannon started to go out with her cousin, George, much to Jessica's chagrin because they promised to find boyfriends together. And she was betraaaaayed!
Shannon threw Jessica a bone, however, and decided to play matchmaker between Kanon and Jessica. The situation was that Jessica had fooled her friends into thinking she had a boyfriend she could bring to her school's culture festival, when the truth was that she still hadn't found anybody... and most likely, wanted that person to be Kanon anyway. Shannon convinced Kanon to go with Jessica, which he did, and Jessica was able to save face in front of her friends and put on a rocking concert. After the school festival, Jessica met up with Kanon again and attempted to get closer to him, explaining a bit about her life philosophy and how it'd be fine if Kanon could also come out of his shell a bit. Unfortunately for Jessica... Kanon did want to get closer to her, but he ultimately couldn't get past the fact that he was "furniture", a being that wasn't even human, and therefore couldn't give Jessica the love that she actually deserved. Kanon rejected Jessica, leaving the girl heartbroken and confused; if anything, she was more upset that Kanon had such a low opinion about himself that he thought he was furniture instead of a human being, and that she couldn't convince him otherwise.
Sadly, by the time the next family conference rolled around, Jessica didn't really make any progress with Kanon. Thankfully, this conference would bring something new that distracted her from her sorrow: The return of her once-estranged cousin Battler, after six years. With the four cousins united again, they proceeded to screw around like in the good old days. Elsewhere on the island though, her grandfather Kinzo decided to screw around with a demon's ceremony that would sacrifice 13 people to revive his beloved witch Beatrice, so things get screwy from here.
On the evening of the annual family conference, Kinzo barges into the parlor where his four children, their spouses, and some other servants were. His kids were talking about his inheritance, and Kinzo decides to randomly slaughter them all for the ceremony, while imprisoning the rest who survive (he only needed six sacrifices for the first "twilight" of the ceremony). One of the deceased is Jessica's mother, Natsuhi, and her father survives and contacts her by phone later to tell her the awful news. Kinzo also issues a challenge to his four grandchildren, challenging them to a series of tests to see who is worth inheriting the glory of the Ushiromiya familly.
Being the kind of kids they are, Jessica, Battler and George instead decide to find Kinzo and smash his face in (Maria could come too, except she was more enthralled with the idea of reviving Beatrice and thus didn't care). Jessica shows up at the spot where her "trial" was supposed to begin and ends up having to answer a question, issued by one of Kinzo's summoned demons, Ronove. The question was asking which of the following she would sacrifice to save the other two: Answer A was yourself, Answer B was the name of your love (in her case, Kanon) and answer C was "everyone else".
Though Jessica is pissed at having to make such a horrible decision, she eventually answers, choosing to sacrifice herself. Her reasoning was that if she chose everyone else over Kanon, or Kanon over everyone else, she would live life as a miserable woman filled with regret. Only option A would allow her to live on without any regret, and be a person worthy of her family and Kanon.
Then she reveals she actually chose Answer D, which was "Go fuck yourself" and starts swinging at Ronove. Jessica's real answer was that if she were to become the family Head, she would be charged with protecting the family with everything she had. Despite her initial disadvantage, Jessica's belief that there is no such thing as useless effort gave her certain determination, which powered up her strength and turned her into an opponent that even Ronove had trouble handling.
Though Jessica, through sheer willpower and brute force, managed to back Ronove into a corner, he ended up timing a trick attack with his other cohort, the demon Gaap, and the two of them used their powers to create an interdimensional crossfire between George (who also chose "go fuck yourself" as an answer, what as coincidence!). Long story short, they both struck a killing blow on each other and lost both of their fights. Alas, sweet princes... However, Ronove revived her for a very short amount of time after the fight, permitting her to use her last moments to have a more dignified death. Jessica chooses to call Battler and urges him to believe in the magic that they've seen, and tells him how he'll probably find her body before finally dying (for real) as Ronove's spell wears off.
Personality:
Jessica, much to the chagrin of her mother, acts like a common, normal teenage girl. Her style of speech is rough, and so is her approach at most things (after all, the first thing she did with Battler was get into a wrestling match with him to see if she could still beat him like when they were kids). She's a fun loving girl at heart, and very down to earth. In other words, your typical teenaged girl. She often has clashes with her family because of this very thing though; as the expected heiress of the Ushiromiya family, Jessica acts nothing like a prim and proper lady, and is often scolded for that.
When it comes to life, Jessica's motto is to “live it”. She has a philosophy that she tried to explain to Kanon once: There were two “sides” of her that she lived by. One was Jessica Ushiromiya, the daughter of the Ushiromiya family, but the other was plain old “Jessie” at school who loved to hang out, led a rock band, and wanted to fall in love. Jessica couldn't live with having to abandon the things she wanted to do for a life she didn't want, so this was how she compromised with herself. When she's at home, she tries to act like the boring lady her mother wants to be (admittedly, without much success since she doesn't really care about that sort of stuff), but when she's on her own, she is free to be her true self. Jessica likes this way of thinking because it allows her to live without regret, which is something that she hates doing: that was how she arrived at her conclusion of sacrificing herself for her test in EP4, by looking at her future self and seeing which person was living with the most regret in her life. That is also why she decided to go down swinging, because Jessica doesn't like to go down without a fight.
Her “true” self then is a determined young woman who knows what she wants and, while she doesn't know how she'll get it, she'll keep trying until she does. “Give up”, Jessica claims, isn't written in her dictionary and she even admits that while she's an idiot, she understands that the really stupid thing to do is give up because if you give up, then you're never going to get what you really want. Going forward and living your life to the fullest is the only way Jessica knows how to live her life and so far, it's been working out for her. So naturally, Jessica is a “don't think, feel” kind of person who doesn't really think things through and acts by emotion or impulse. In fact, Jessica is actually a very emotional person; she can easily fly into a rage and run off to clobber someone without even thinking of the consequences, and Shannon observed that Jessica's rough style of speaking and acting is her way of guarding her heart from being hurt. It's true to an extent; Jessica likes to act tough because it's easier for her to deal with fear by acting tough, and to cover her sadness with anger. So in other words, she likes to bluff with her own feelings in order to make herself feel better, which has mixed results sometimes. She is actually a surprisingly sensitive person, given the demeanor she tries to present to others, and she has a naive view of the world and how it works still. Though Jessica does have determination in spades, it takes time for her to build up her resolve, though she's not incapable of doing that.
Since we're talking about Jessica, let's talk about love. She has a lot of love for Kanon, whom she wants to be happy. Jessica tries to explain her philosophy to Kanon in EP2, only to have it be rejected. While this hurt her, she continued to pursue Kanon in her own way. In EP4, she explains that as long as you keep slinging words of love and affection even towards the hardest of hearts, it will eventually soak through and the effort is never useless. Her real goal was to at least get Kanon to stop calling himself furniture, as she couldn't stand seeing him treat himself in such a derogatory fashion.
She doesn't just love Kanon, but her family too. Jessica was very happy to see Battler after 6 years and was ecstatic when he finally called the family to confirm that he was coming, and she cares for her other cousins George and Maria (even if a tiff in EP1 with Maria caused her to yell at the little girl, Jessica came to regret it a lot). She especially loves her parents, a fact that probably isn't readily known to those who don't know her very well considering how much she complains about them. Even though Jessica has no interest in the affairs of the Ushiromiya family, she appreciates how much effort Krauss and Natsuhi put forward to try and protect their family from the relatives and critics trying to knock them off the ladder of succession. She gets very defensive if her family is criticized, and very protective when they're in danger.
Have you read up on how the game works?:
The plugin for the Guidebook is called the Flaming Ferret, and Jessica can get money by occupying a job, taking up missions, and the tried and true method of mooching off folks who already have money, like what she's done her whole life. B|b
1st person sample:
Hey, everyone can see this, right? [ As Jessica is still not yet acquainted with technology, she is seen looking at the camera dubiously. ] Well, I guess if you can't, I'll find out. Anyway! I found this thing... Ah, I can't say I found it, for some reason I had it on me when I came here and I'm - well, here, take a look at it.
[ She swings the camera over, and it shows the most glorious crystal statute of a manatee. It is the most perfect replica of a manatee in crystal that was probably crafted with human hands, and Jessica can only stare at it in wonder and confusion before she swivels the camera back to herself. She looks unhappy. Then again, any mortal would be unhappy after gazing upon such beauty and realizing their own imperfections. Or maybe Jessica just doesn't like manatees. ]
That thing, it's kind of weird and I figured it must belong to someone here, so... Does anyone want it? Just to be clear, I didn't steal it or anything, I just had it when I woke up, so I didn't do anything weird or illegal, okay?! Someone just take it already, it's kind of freaking me out!
[ She casts another look at the crystallized structure of manatee perfection before switching the camera off. ]
3rd person sample:
"Oh, no... Venom, where are you?! Here boy, here! Where'd you go?!"
Jessica had always bragged about how she wanted nothing more then to graduate so she could apply to college and move out of her parent's house, or rather, her mother's bothersome shadow. It was her greatest desire that she move hundreds of miles away to get away from her parents, and now, she bitterly noted, she had not only gotten the farthest distance she could possibly get from her family, but she was also able to live independently, just like she always wanted to. Which meant crappy pay doing the crappiest jobs ever. If it wasn't for the fact that doing this meant she could eventually raise enough money to being her planet back (that's how it worked, she was told, even if she didn't quite get it), then Jessica would have gladly worked at crappy jobs for the rest of her life. That's what she told herself anyway, to keep herself going.
It wasn't like all the jobs were bad. Some of them were actually kind of fun, in their own screwed up way: Being paid to destroy sandcastles wasn't too bad, though it kind of made her feel like a jerk. But then again, she did kind of enjoy being a fudge swirler. And then there was that weird one where she had to throw rocks at windows; she was pretty sure that no matter which way you spun it, vandalism was vandalism, so Jessica resolved to get a much more friendlier job next time. And who could resist being a seeing eye human for a blind puppy? Who didn't love puppies?
Well, she was starting to get an idea for how one might start to develop a dislike for dogs once she experienced the torture of having to walk a stubborn, unfriendly, and hairy white puppy who had been aptly named "Venom". Jessica thought that was a horrible name. And then she spent some time with him. He was the most unfriendliest dog she had ever met, and it was like there was something about her that personally offended him. She didn't know what it was, but the moment Venom had sensed her presence, he seemed to hate it and walking Venom had been an exercise in patience, one that Jessica failed when she let go of his leash in frustration and didn't scramble fast enough to grab it before the dog went rocketing down the street, towards the direction he had been so frantically pulling at.
"You stupid mutt, get over here already! ... I mean, come on, Venom, come back!" She tried whistling, calling, shaking some treats, but no matter what she did, Venom refused to come. At some point, she had lost track of him while chasing him through the Thor and was just roaming the streets, calling in vain and feeling like punching something in frustration. How the hell did she lose a blind puppy? Wandering through the streets aimlessly was probably not the best method to look for a lost dog, but Jessica wasn't exactly at her most rational at the moment as she searched frantically. How did she mess up this badly?! Everyone was counting on her, and she was doing all of these crappy jobs, and and and the stupid dog wouldn't come!
No, don't lose your head over this, Jessie! She scolded herself, holding her head in frustration and shaking it a little, as if hoping that would cool her head. It didn't really, giving her a slight headache instead, but she had to do something. She wasn't just going to walk back empty-handed and said she lost the stupid dog. That just wasn't going to happen! Ushiromiya Jessica never gave up, and she wasn't going to lose to some stupid dog!
That was a comforting thought, but 45 minutes of no progress was enough to start unraveling it.
"Auugh... geh, fine! You win! Look, just get back here already! Don't make me call the whole - Damnit!"
Unable to contain the frustration building up inside of her, Jessica faced the nearest wall and punched, rewarded with sharp pain and something falling on her head.
"OW!"
It just so happened that this building in particular, a seedy looking bar that was advertising Pool Night in Spanish, happened to be the exact building whose roof Venom decided to occupy, for reasons unknown to all but him. It just so happened that he had been standing in such a position that when Jessica punched the wall, the vibrations traveled up the wall and onto the roof, where it jiggled Venom's leg in a way where he slipped and lost his footing, and he tumbled in such a way that he fell off the roof, and onto Jessica's head.
"Ow, ow ow... Ah... Venom?! Where'd you come from?!"
Questions?: I think I mentioned this earlier in the app, but in Episode 6, Jessica was able to control her own upgrades because she made a contract with Zepar and Furfur, two demons who were hosting a love duel (winning couple gets to be together, the other two fall apart), so if there was a similar situation in GB (with her making a contract with demonic entities of a similar nature... or hell, if a Zepar or Furfur actually apps), would this be applicable as well? It's not super important if I can or cannot do this, I was just wondering LOL.
Also can she adopt this dog I made up for her sample at some point in-game? B(
Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: yes. I hope so.
