Serious Thoughts...

I'm currently reading a book by Jeremy Scahill call "Blackwater: The Rise Of The World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army".

It's heavy reading and slow going, but it's interesting. I have a very long way to go in the book yet, but what I've read so far certainly has me thinking, though not all my thoughts are well-formed just yet.

It's a multifaceted problem and what comes of doing away with the draft. If you have a shortfall in a volunteer army and wage war or "peace-keeping initiatives" around the world, you need to have a military to back it up. Where do you get them? There have always been professional soldiers to fill in the gaps. History repeats itself.

I definitely want to read that book. sounds interesting.

Definitely a difficult problem and it is and has been a necessary part of warfare for thousands of years. After all, we probably wouldn't have won the Revolutionary War had it not been for a few mercenaries.

It's just not something I've ever studied before and I get the impression Blackwater is unlike any other mercenary organization.

If you don't mind a heavy read, I'd say it's a book worth checking out.

Definitely, not a new situation. I'm looking forward to reading this. I read everything from brain candy to brain evolving. Thanks for recommending.
