That's true... The sad part is using dogs and cats as feed wasn't just limited to the cattle industry. Although the major leaders in pet food currently promise not to use cats and dogs in their pet food for cats and dogs, there's no legislation to prohibit them from doing so. "A Canadian company, Sanimal Inc., was putting 40,000 pounds of dead dogs and dead cats into its dog and cat food every week, until discontinuing the practice in June 2001. "This food is healthy and good," said the company's vice president of procurement, responding to critics, "but some people don't like to see meat meal that contains any pets."" (From Schlosser's book again, in the Afterword, pg. 287).
I wonder why that would be disturbing to anyone... ^^'''' In the afterword, he talks about how feeding animals to other animals (i.e., pigs and chicken to cattle, and vice versa) could accelerate inter-species jumps of mad cow disease.

I used to work for IBP. There's a lot of money to be made...which is why I did it.

But to this day, there are still things I have nightmares about.
