I'm grading the labs for this week (where they put different waveforms from a function generator through a speaker and frequency analyzer) and I'm getting some great descriptions of sound. Some of the best:

It sounds like...

"a UFO"

"random jibble jabble"

"that annoying noise when they test the emergency broadcast system"

"a very fast Leslie speaker on a Hammond organ" (I may just be the only TA who'd get this reference)

"Buzz Lightyear: Space Ranger's laser beam from the Disney Pixar animation studio's Toy Story and Toy Story 2"

"the SNES version of Zelda when Link only has one heart left"

"a robot tried to say something with beeps and for some reason got stuck in an infinite loop"

"the pull-it sound from bop it"

"computer blue screen of death sound"

"a ray gun from old sci-fi movies like Flash Gordon"

"Asteroids when you hold down the shoot button"

"the self-destruct alarm in a James Bond villain's base"

The sound is...

"...buzzy and harsh kinda like when a be goes really close to your ear, it's really annoying and I want to swat it away" (bees were a common theme, but this was the best description)

"what you hear waiting in line for Space Mountain coming from the fake control panel"

"a loud-ass buzzing sound"

"similar to a small child attempting to sing a pitch while riding in a car, driving on an excessively bumpy road"

"the music someone does that weird light thing with their hands to"

"a low buzzing, much like that of a man passing gas"

"irritating" (My thoughts exactly! Thank goodness this lab is over.)
