Groningen?

Looks like we'll be going to the Netherlands for Thanksgiving week.  Anyone know of any fun stuff to do in Groningen (the uni town) or in Amsterdam (in Winter)?  Would we need a vehicle?  How about good places to stay in Amsterdam?

Hey, I haven't posted in weeks.  This seemed like a conversation-starter.  Less boring than work, street reconstruction ( Read more... )

I've never been to Groningen, but in Amsterdam...

Perhaps not "fun", exactly, but for me the Anne Frank House was a must-see.

I really enjoyed the Kattenkabinet, a weird little museum dedicated to cat-related art. Of course, part of why I enjoyed it is it also houses several actual cats, one of which climbed into my lap, and then onto my shoulder, and rode around through the next several rooms.

And speaking of animals, we also enjoyed the zoo. I seem to recall it was cool and rainy when we went, in... late September? Dunno whether winter weather would be prohibitive.

Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum were also both excellent.

We neither had nor needed a car. I don't remember exactly where we stayed, but I think it was in the vicinity of Vondelpark, and we walked everywhere.

We stayed at a random, unnecessarily upscale hotel that we got relatively cheaply through hotels.com or something like it.

I am jealous. One of my goals is to visit the Rijksmuseum, on account of all the Rembrandts.

I've been to Groningen, but I was about 12 and on a bicycle trip and mostly interested in where I could buy coke and flirting with cute Dutch teens.

So no help there... but it sounds fun!
