Tucson taxis

There are a lot of unrated taxi companies on Yelp, so I thought I'd see what people here had for recommendations and stay-away stories. I need a ride to and from the airport for a trip next month. I think I can get a ride from a friend for the latter, but the former is so early in the morning that I feel bad about asking anyone.

I actually know a guy personally. Let me see if I can find his number. Bug me over on FB if I forget as I'm bound to.

Avoid Discount Cab (the green ones) for the early morning pick up. I usually take them home from the airport but twice now I've called and arranged for early morning pick ups and it just ended in frustration. The first time was a 4:30a pick up for a 6a flight. I live on the east side so I figured that should give me plenty of time to get there and check in/do security etc. 4:30 came, no cab. 4:45 came, no cab. I call and they say they don't have anyone in the area and will get someone there as soon as possible but it will prolly be a bit. I called a second company (I don't remember who off the top of my head, sorry) and they had someone there by 5. I got a call from Discount at 5:45 saying the driver would be there in 5 min. *shaking my head* Second time went pretty much the same except it was a 3a pick up and the dispatcher told me when I complained that even though I had scheduled in advance it was just a "suggestion" and they weren't responsible if the cabbie got busy and couldn't make it on time. Because 3a on a ( ... )

Yikes! Yeah, I get the sense that for a lot of companies, reservations are just "suggestions." I've run into that with regular rental car companies as well as a moving truck rental company.

I rarely use taxis. It's scary that some of them are that way with things like airport rides. Thanks for the heads up!

I usually drive myself and park. The long term parking isn't too expensive ($4/day, I think, and when I've crunched the numbers, even for a week-long trip, it ends up cheaper. If you don't have a car, then that doesn't work out so well... I'd probably skip taxis, and go for an airport shuttle (we do have those here in Tucson, right?) Though they may be more expensive, they tend to be more reliable.
