 Title: Hero
Pairing: KUM and background Brittana
Summary: Sam's second favourite film is Spiderman. After an argument, Kurt finds an original way to make Sam smile again

Kurt storms into the choir room, his tone of voice causing Santana and Brittany to halt mid sentence and look up at him. His face is flushed red and he's quickly followed by an even angrier looking Sam. Santana turns away from her girlfriend and watches the two intently, her eyebrows raised. The school's golden couple never argue, it's just a fact that they are the sickly sweet pair who display far too much public affection and simply agree with everything the other person says. This is an interesting development that Santana isn't going to miss out on.

“When were you going to tell me? Were you going to call me from Tennessee?” Kurt all but yells to his boyfriend.

“Kurt, why are you so angry? Of course I'd have told you, I was looking for a good time” Sam stops and runs his hand through his newly cut, brown hair, his eyes briefly falling on Santana and glaring at the smug look on her face. He lowers is voice. “We'll talk about this later. You're being childish”

“What?” Kurt looks like he's about to scream or self combust or something. Brittany tightens her grip on Santana's hand and her mouth falls open as Kurt carries on. “I am not the childish one here Sam, you're the one jetting off for a month and not even bothering to tell your boyfriend. I thought we had no secrets”

“I was going to tell you! I just knew you'd get like this. This is stupid. Let's get through the day and then we'll sit down and talk”

“You leave tomorrow! You've had all week to tell me. I just...don't know why I thought you were different”

“That's not fair” Sam can only imagine he's being compared to Blaine and the secrets he regularly kept from Kurt when they were together. That hurts. Sam crosses his arms around his body and takes a breathe, looking up for a moment. “You're being such a drama queen” He tries to force a smile, but apparently he's just said the worst thing imaginable because Kurt's expression is reminiscent of that time Karofsky slushied him while he was wearing his new Vivienne Westwood sweater. He looks at the floor and then up at Sam again, his eyes watery.

“Why are we still dating then Sam? We have nothing in common and you obviously think so little of me...”

“Fine” Sam holds his hands out and shakes his head, while Brittany gasps and stares at the scene, and Santana remains looking surprised and still a little excited if she's going to be completely honest.

“You clearly don't know me, if you think for one second that you're not my whole world. If you want to think that, go ahead. I'm gone”

He doesn't wait for a reaction, just turns on his heel and abruptly leaves the choir room. Kurt puts his hand up to his mouth, staring after him and Brittany jumps up, running over and hugging him as he visibly struggles to keep tears at bay.

Sam doesn't return to Glee club and when Kurt's questioned, Santana jumps in and says he's catching up on some essay for English. She smiles to herself, sometimes she can't understand why everyone thinks she's such a bitch. Especially seeing as she's going to sort this little mess out, with some help from Brittany, who's become pretty close to Sam since the Summer. Being the only two out gay couples at McKinley means a lot of hanging out and double dating apparently. The fact that both Brittany and Santana had got their mac on with at least one of the guys was at first a little odd, but where Santana had taken fondly to Kurt's inner bitch, Brittany and Sam enjoyed geeking out together and watching crappy 80's teen films, so the four of them usually enjoyed themselves.

“We're staging a 'geek-vention'” Brittany tells Kurt, as her and her girlfriend corner him after Glee club.

“What is it with Glee club members adding '-vention' to the end of a word and thinking that it automatically makes everything all right again” Kurt shakes his head and picks up his bag.

“Look Hummel, I don't like to admit this out loud, but we like our double dates. Brittany's gonna sort out Trouty mouth, while I tell you my side of the plan” Santana states, simultaneously studying her nails and avoiding eye contact with Kurt, it's something he's become used to.

“Don't call him that.” Kurt sighs and then raises his chin, looking down at both the girls “I don't need help with my relationship, thank you. I can deal with this on my own”

“Don't be so stubborn and for once in your life, let someone else help you” Santana snaps and Kurt doesn't look taken aback, used to his friends attitude by now.

“What the world is a geek-vention then? It sounds a bit ridiculous”

“Brit Brit's idea, because she's a complete genius. And Kurt, you seen your man? He's by definition ridiculous”

“Right. Going to pretend you didn't say that. What do I have to do?”

Kurt knows by now that arguing with Santana is just pointless and he also knows, deep down, that he's acted far too dramatically and he never wants to see Sam look like that again. It's their first argument in the three months they've been dating, and he's embarrassed to admit that he already misses his boyfriend.

**

Sam is sat with his legs folded under him, eyes fixed on the TV as Brittany scoops ice cream into two bowls. Brittany knows by instinct that when Sam is upset about Kurt, he'll forget the diet for a few hours and ice cream is perfect for this occasion. She knew in New York when he brought a multi pack of Doritoes and stared longingly at the back of Kurt's head for almost three days straight. Every one has this idea that Brittany is stupid because she says the first thing that comes into her head, but really she's very perceptive. She had confronted him on the way home from New York and got him to spill his heart out while Kurt sat a few rows back with his headphones in, and, as it turned out later, not actually playing any music.

“It's raining” Brittany states as she passes the bowl to Sam and he groans, taking the bowl and helping himself to a rather large spoonful, before talking with his mouth full.

“It reflects my mood, mother nature knows I'm depressed”

“Uh...yeah Sam, I'm sure that's true”

Brittany isn't sure who mother nature is but she settles down next to her friend and lets him rest his head on her shoulder. She tries to contain her excitement, as the rain is actually making this whole 'geek-vention' plan a lot cooler and more effective. Sam has his lips pressed together and a sad look in his eyes that reminds Brittany of Lord Tubbington every time his food runs out and he's asking for more.

“I feel like Peter Parker” Sam gestures to the screen, where the first Spider man film playing. “I try so hard to be his hero and every time I do it wrong”

“Kurt loves you, like San loves me. She said you're soul mates, like you were always destined to be together but you have to fight to be with your soul mate. It's not meant to be easy”

“Santana said that?” Sam asks, surprised by his ex-girlfriend's apparent feelings and also secretly happy that she thinks something like that, something that Sam and Kurt had spent so many nights discussing. Brittany's about to answer when her phone beeps and her face lights up as she reads the message.

“Speaking of the devil?” Sam asks, causing Brittany's smile to grow.

“Come outside” She states, jumping up. Sam looks out of the window and pulls his hoody around himself shaking his head.

“But Brits, it's pouring down”

“Exactly!...I mean, rain's good. Rain makes you feel better because it washes the pain away”

Her smile is massive now, Sam hasn't seen her so excited in his life. He decides he better comply, just in case she gets upset. He doesn't want to deal with the Santana shaped aftermath of that mistake.

They step outside and Sam pulls his hood over his head as the wind hits them and the rain falls onto their faces. It's not late but the storm as made the sky black. Despite Sam feeling cold and still miserable, he can't help the smile from appearing on his face as he watches his best friend spinning and giggling as the rain soaks her. Before he'd finally got with Kurt, and when Santana was still struggling to accept her sexuality, him and Brittany had made a pact that if they remained single they'd go to senior prom together. He still admits that she's the most beautiful girl he's had the pleasure of knowing, inside and out. A playful grin flashes across her face as she takes a few steps back and looks up the roof of the motel. Sam follows her gaze and sees a familiar shape, clad in an all black suit that was already soaked through.

“Kurt? What the hell are you doing up there?”

Kurt just smiles, mirroring the look he'd given Sam that day in the showers when he'd been teasing him about his obviously dyed hair. Then he presses a finger to his lips. Sam turns around and notes that Brittany seems to have danced away. It dawns on him that this whole night has been some kind of plan she formed. Of course it had, this is Brittany after all. Sam swears that underneath the innocent smiles and daft remarks, she's always plotting something. Kurt takes a few steps and then sits, slipping slightly and laughing as he grabs the guttering for support.

“I swear Kurt, if you fall and hurt yourself I am going to be so...”

“Oh shut up Evans” Kurt yells back, with a smile in his voice that stops Sam from taking the outburst seriously. It's then Sam sees the rope tied to his foot and the look of concentration on his face as he ties the other end to a roof tile and starts talking.

“Your favourite film is Avatar and quite frankly we couldn't find one romantic scene to re create. Your hair isn't long enough any more and I don't own any blue clothes...”

Sam furrows his brow watching the scene and getting ready to run and catch his boyfriend if he slips. He knows that after a few months of being a cheerleader Kurt has completed some pretty daring routines and has a very flexible body but Sam's still nervous.

“I found out you second favourite movie from Brittany.” Kurt continues, slipping his ass off of the roof tiles, still gripping to the guttering. “First though, I always wanted to shout my love for you from a roof top.”

Sam giggles as his boyfriend beckons him over towards him, gazing at him though his wet fringe. His perfectly styled hair is in his eyes and Sam takes that as a sign of true love already, knowing how particular Kurt is about his hair.

“I love you Sam Evans!” Kurt yells and Sam laughs, looking up at his boyfriend in awe.

“I love you too, you crazy man” He answers.

“Just call me Spiderman” Kurt says with a shrug and he turns for moment before gracefully letting his hands fall from the roof and his body land upside down. Only Kurt could make that look beautiful, his arms out like an angel as he swings slightly and then settles. Sam steps closer, feeling Kurt's warm breathe on his frozen face. Both of their smiles drop as they gaze into each others eyes.

“I'm sorry for not telling you sooner”

“I'm sorry for getting mad”

“I'm going to miss you...”

“Jesus Sam, the blood's running to my head. Just kiss me already”

Sam grins and moves closer to his boyfriend, taking his face in his hands and pressing his lips against his. He locks his fingers into Kurt's hair, pulling him closer. It's an odd angle and their noses press against each others chins but Kurt barely notices as he praises himself for being with a guy who kisses like this, and for finally having the courage to find out what real love feels like. Both Sam and Kurt could take off their masks now, they didn't have to hide behind muscles and designer labels because they loved each other as they were.

A few feet away Santana locks eyes with her girlfriend and they both smile at each other.

“Mission accomplished” Santana whispers, before linking her little finger with Brittany and walking over to her parked car.
