Lost in translation?

Sometimes I really have to restrain myself when I'm working through a translation. For example, take this line:

I agree, I think learning some parts of a new language gives us new ideas about the culture. I had been leaving notes in translations, but then somehow got away from it. I should probably consider going back to that system so long as the notes don't get cumbersome.
