Learning to drive in an area with dual carriageways is very very handy. I was driving all around County Durham and Tyneside as a learner and had pretty much every near misses (nearly being crushed by a lorry coming down a slip lane, pulling out without checking my blindspot, sitting for too long in someon else's blindspot etc etc) with an expert driver beside me who could take over if needed. In contrast, my friends who learned at home (which has the A1 but not on the test route) were freaked out by slip lanes and motorways for years.

Dual carriageways are actually my favourite road. But then I am terrified of overtaking on normal roads!

Enjoy Durham ... with any luck you won't be getting roasted while having to trek up and down all the hills! (My fan has not left my side all day today!) I shall be sweltering in a posh frock in Norwich no doubt!

Looking forward to seeing you. When will you be arriving?

Don't worry about lack of news about funding. I didn't hear about mine til the middle of August.
