I recommend Green Day (American Idiot on random always does me quite well, as it's mostly at the right kind of beat for using CV machines *and* I can enjoy mentally singing along and ranting against Western superficiality and the Bush regime!). I always liked Nirvana for the gym too.

Most recently I've been loving Pink's I'm Not Dead, which I was introduced to by an aerobics instructor in a class! And Bond theme tunes as well, slightly oddly.

Damn. I really need to start doing that sort of thing, but suffer from a serious case of can't be arsed.

I am also pretty much aware that any diet/exercise attempts will not have much success without a real attempt to cut down on the pints, and that really doesn't seem to be happening.

I guess I'd exercise to Combichrist, but I don't know if that's your sort of thing.
How about Tool?
Or "Appetite for destruction", "Ride the lightning" (the whole album) or "South of Heaven"...

Probably less to your tastes, but I find that 80s music has the right sort of bounciness to it, and whenever I'm starting to hit the wall running, a Proclaimers song comes on my mp3 player just in time to get me through it!

Pete Steel from TypeONeg works out to Laibach too - you may find that TypeO are good gym music.
aside from that check out VNV Nation - electronic dance music for goth/metal types.
