So Tulane is getting rid of a bunch of the engineering programs. everyone knows this...even if you arent an engineering major. and they have some groups on yahoo for people to join together and organize and bitch together. and of course i joined the group just to support my fellow engineers. but i got really fed up when people started talking ( Read more... )

I kind of feel the same you do and I get tons of shit for it. Yes, it sucks that they had to get rid of majors, but the way I see it, it was lose some majors or lose the school. No matter what majors were axed, there would have been a bunch of drama.

And I don't see any petitions for bringing back the graduate school, for saving the jobs of the people let go, or any of that. What about the board members? Don't just shoot the messenger (Cowen), get the people behind the message. Blah blah, I know I'm just a freshmen, but it doesn't mean that I'm stupid. (In fact, I know I'm smarter than these people starting shit with me.)

As a product of the California public education system I am definitely familiar with what you must be feeling right now, even though I am not an engineering major. It always comes down to the bottom line; Tulane has to survive. And I understand the pain that comes with seeing programs dismantled and watching students struggle with having their rug pulled out from under them, but we have to ask a painful question: What would we remove in place of engineering? Cut funding for housing? Financial Aid? Art? History? English?

It makes me sad to think that you would be afraid to post your opinion. That second poster should have been respectful of your stance, there was no call for him to be patronizing or act like your opinion was worthless. None of us really know what was going on behind the scenes, but I find it hard to believe that President Cowen decided this on a lark.

Mad props and kudos to you.

I concur that the second response was, indeed, blatantly rude.

As someone who had spent years of high school dreaming of going to Tulane to study engineering, and who had vehemently defended Tulane and President Cowen during a period of "exile" at another college, I must say that I am still quite disappointed in the decisions of the powers that be at Tulane. I understand that sacrifices had to be made, but I think too high a price was paid. Nonetheless, I reconciled myself to the fact that no action on the part of any student will make any change in the university's recovery plans, so I'll not waste time arguing with anyone about it.

Tulane was once an integral part of my future plans, but that chapter of my life closed the day the recovery plan was announced. I was fortunate enough to be offered a chance to stay at the nationally recognized engineering school I'm at now, so I no longer feel any connections to Tulane.
