yes, the QWERTY keyboard (named for the first six letters on the first row) was designed to be as slow as possilbe. The farther apart the commonly-used keys are, the less likely the typewriter will jam. Dvorak invented a more efficient layout to suit the newer typewriters and, now, computers. Unless you are writing html code or typing in L337, it is 27 times more efficient.
