My doctor wrote me a little note this week to say that my cholesterol is very high, and that she wants me to take "cholesterol classes" with the medical clinic. I already knew my cholesterol was a bit high - I gave blood in December, and they sent me a little card saying "check with your doctor! borderline high cholesterol!" It was the day after ( Read more... )

How often does cholesterol school meet? How many sessions is it? You could skip it I could go (except that I'm in WA). Honestly I probably need to learn it better than you.

HAPPY EASTER!

I don't know - I have to call the NUTRITIONAL DEPARTMENT and get the 411. But I think there are two sessions and - get this - they might be in Fremont. FREMONT CHOLESTEROL SCHOOL. Boo.

you have a much better attitude about this than me. i would resent being told to go to such a thing as "cholesterol school", and then i'd refuse to go and probably offend my doctor/etc. (this is why i have not taken defensive driving since i was forced to do so in high school by my mother. i do not enjoy spending money and time on 'classes' where they tell me things i already know. perhaps i need to change my outlook...?)

i do not have high cholesterol, surprisingly enough, but a good number in my extended family do, so it's probably coming, somewhere down the road... i'm sorry to hear that you're having such issues with it. :(

also, i hope to email you my cover letter/resume sometime over the next few days.

Seriously, it's $50 bucks!! Though there will be a co-pay, since my doctor referred me. I am loath to go only because I think it will be a little embarrassing. I mean, maybe the moral of the story is that anyone can have high cholesterol, but I'm worried it's going to be little me and bunch of fat fifty-year old men, you know?

YAY LETTER!

I'll send you a copy of my homework, so you know what's up at cholesterol school! Maybe I'll even get CHOLESTEROL CERTIFICATION at the end!

"Cholesterol school?"
Weird!
It's possible you have the genetic kind of high cholesterol,
when I was in school, a friends' little sister had to go on meds for it.
(she was an otherwise normal little kid, it wasn't her diet, and
from what I saw, she got planty of exercise!)

I wonder if you'll get homework.
a 100 word essay on the eating of vegetables?

"Once upon a time, there was a carrot. The carrot was orange. The carrot went into my mouth and I ate it up. The end." I'm a quarter of the way there!!

Yeah, my dad is pretty much convinced it's genetic, since he has it too... but BOO ANYWAY!

If dietary changes and exercise can't bring you back from the "red zone", just keep in contact w/ your dr if you need to try the cholesterol medications. My dad has high cholestrol (and a love for potato chips and Mc Donalds) and one of the medications he was on did not agree with him, and he didn't realize at first that his tiredness and muscle weakness was due to the medicine. somehow someone made the connection and he was taken off the first one he tried. They switched him to a different one, and he's doing much better. :)

Sometimes it's just genetics. My boyfriend is practically vegan (he occasionally eats low-fat yoghurt, but no other animal products), but thanks to a family history of cardiovascular problems his cholesterol levels are always waaaayyy too high. Even with his ideal, rabbit-like diet they still had to put him on statin drugs. Fortunately those keep his cholesterol levels in check.

As soon as I'm settled as a resident in Canuckistan with its free commie health care, I'm going to get my cholesterol checked as well. There's not too much high cholesterol in my family, but I do eat a lot of saturated fat/cholesterol (mmm, half/half lattes) and want to see if I should, y'know, cut it out.

My father was actually the same way. His diet wasn't the best starting out, but when his cholesterol got high (around fifty, mind you, not twenty-three!), he cut out basically all fats from his diet and still couldn't get it down. He's on Lipitor or something now, which has totally solved the problem.

If you're ever worried about it, I bet you could get it checked at a clinic day at your local medical institution... I think they'll do cholesterol... though I'm not sure.
