Windows Vista: First Impressions

Mar 04, 2007 15:03

This entry is just my first impressions of Windows Vista. It's just me talking about my one day of Vista experience, so don't expect extravagant writing. :)

Yesterday I bought Windows Vista: Home Premium. Now, the reason why I actually went out and dropped 200 bucks (gift card saved me 50ish. Yay.) on Vista is somewhat interesting. Several months ago, circa August 2006 I bought two shiny new games; X2: Reunion and Age of Empires III. Well, I installed X2 on my PC, (nicknamed by my best friend “The Third Fastest Computer”, after Embry Riddle’s “The Brain”), it crashed and burned. Yes. The game seemed to have utterly fucked up my HDD. My first thought, of course, was something along the lines of, “Shit. Fucking. Fuck-piece-of-flamey-shit-fuck.” That was okay, though, because the only truly important thing I had on my computer were my Oblivion saves and in-progress mods. Then I remember that I had bought a new 120 GB HDD specifically for when Vista came out. So I tried to install XP on it. However, my best friend was in possession of my XP disk for several months and for some reason it had little specks of… who knows… which seemed to have burned into the disk, as no amount of scrubbing with water made them come off. Whatever, I was off to college in a few weeks and I wouldn’t really need my PC anyways, as I had my Powerbook anyways.

Now it is Spring Break and I want to play some computer games, dammit, because I’ve been craving Oblivion for months and I refused to buy it again for my Xbox. So, I bought Vista because, lets face it, I’ll need it at some point in the future and it’s a waste of money to buy XP Pro again.

My first thought once Vista was up and running was, “Hey… it really is like Mac OS X.” Which, for some reason, one of my friends (you know who you are ;) ) believes bothers me because I am “a rabid Apple fan” despite having grown up loving, using, and eventually building my PCs. ;) Anyways, the whole “like-a-Mac” thing didn’t bother me much because I was more or less like, “Hey, now I can have some of the nifty features I’ve been using for a couple of years on both of my computers. Sweeeeet!” And then I began installing things… Oh the dreaded “Cancel or Allow?” box. Really, coming from my Mac, which I have set to require my password when installing anything, it really doesn’t bother me… at all. What is somewhat annoying is when you copy and paste files, it asks if you are sure you want to do that. Yes. I am sure. I fecking asked it to. I’m sure there is a way to turn that off, I just haven’t found it yet, and really, I haven’t actually become angry yet, so there’s not reason to until I do or until I become really bored or curious.

With that, the sidebar feature is very cute. I’ve got it docked to the right side. I’ve got my analog clock which is nice and bright, and my local weather, CPU load, and iTunes controller thing all dimmed until I mouse over them. Very nice, very convenient. One thing I rejoiced at was the ability to, like in all Windows prior to XP, change the color scheme to whatever I so choose. Oh the joy.

X2, however, still doesn’t work, which leads me to believe I may have faulty software. All in all, Vista gets my stamp of nerdy approval and, though it has its quirks, I am greatly enjoying the aesthetics and new features…. So far.

This is just a pic of my PC's desktop.
