Title: Grains
Rating: G
Note: I wrote this quite a while ago. Like in August 2008.
Summary: A very short piece inspired by the idea of the Exodus.
Disclaimer: This is in no way a parody or trivialisation of the Exodus and is not about religion whatsoever.

40 years in the desert…

Grain grain everywhere but not a… grain to eat?

So much sand, and dust. More sand than dust. If you thought about it really, the dust was only a grain of sand broken up into a million more pieces, but if you thought about it really, you might go insane.

One man was trying not to think at all.

He murmured to himself, “I suppose… when the time comes… we’ll get a new… a new… shop.”

Another man walking beside him, just within hearing range said, “Crop. You mean crop.”

“Oh yes,” sighed man number 1 quietly. “My hair could do with a bit of a trim…”

Man number 2 pulled to a halt.

“What?” He said. The sun was getting to him and he couldn’t believe that the man next to him wasn’t taking the current matter at hand seriously.

Man number 1 also stopped and looked at man number 2.

“I said…” He trailed off. He wasn’t sure if he had said anything.

“What?” Said the second man. “What did you… say?”

“I said…” The first man trailed off again.

The two stared at each other; really, they were staring through each other. Neither of them was paying attention to the other. After a while they couldn’t remember what they had been saying. A while after that, they couldn’t remember if they had actually been talking at all.

The sun beat down upon them hard, as the rest of their companions kept on walking. The two men just stood and stared at nothing.

Soon after that, they weren’t really sure that they even existed.
