Does this happen to other people? Do you ever read a news story about a subject for which you have a wealth of knowledge and discover just how much guesswork and plain errors news outlets are happy to publish?

Me, I know about birds, I know quite a lot actually, and that's why I know this article is wrong - the bird comes from Greenland - not ( Read more... )

Ugh, I notice things like that too, and get annoyed. My friends are all "Oh why does it matter? Its not something important!" but the point is, it is a supposedly reputable news source making errors that could have been avoided by 2 minutes easy research, which makes me wonder how much journalists actually do just make up or fail to verify, even with important stuff.

That 'snow bunting' looks a lot like a greenfinch with partial albinism. :-P

I bet there are no shortage of bird geeks who comment or email in telling the news media they got that stuff wrong, never gets changed though. Fine these aren't Earth shattering stories, but you'd hope there'd be a principle at stake here.

That sort of misinformation drives me crazy too, and only makes me further doubt the reliability of everything else reported. Add to that the increasingly poor spelling and grammar I see in the newspapers and elsewhere and well *growls*--it's so bloody frustrating, isn't it? What ever happened to fact-checking and editors?
