But you've worked with Rufus for a good portion of your life. You really hadn't realized yet that he has the capacity to be completely ruthless when it comes to getting what he wants from the world around him?

On the other hand, Zack still seems extraordinarily willing to give me the benefit of the doubt in all things, despite my own history of madness and cruelty. Perhaps it's something to do with a subordinate's loyalty to a superior officer...

Ruthlessness is ruthlessness, and power is power, in my admittedly peculiarly skewed experience. I doubt that he could have learned the capacity for ruthlessness in one area of his life without learning the capacity in all areas.

Whether or not one chooses to apply that ruthlessness is another matter, of course, but once the mindset has been acquired, it's ...remarkably pervasive. It strips down all the world into a very coldly pragmatic equation: can I make this further my purposes, or not? And as much as possible is gathered into the field of things that can be made to further one's purposes, including people. Because things that can't be made to further one's purposes should be eliminated.

...I understand that method of thinking far better than I ought, really.
