Three days is usually the wait time between a date and when you call back. So I'd go for it.

I know, but still, if three days is the waiting time for a date call back, then a return call should be the same.

Here's the rule:
No more than three unreturned phonecalls.
Any more than that, and he's avoiding you.

If he hasn't called within a week, he's either not interested, or forgot.
Call back.
