The Secret Places of the Sun

This is the fruit of my in-class daydreaming and scribbling - thanks a lot for the inspiration, Middle East Studies and International Development!  I'm pretty sure Drs S and R would be horrified to learn that I've taken to writing fanfic instead of taking notes.

Written for justkingedmund's Weekly Challenge #14: Dawn.
Usually these things are drabbles, but this ( Read more... )

Elegance in prose. The subtle descriptions, the different segments overflowing with colour and richness make for a tangible and memorable account of Ed's travels to Calormen, which I'm always glad to see in a different light. The pros and cons of that civilization which, with many deeds to the cotrary, has its beauties as well. And the views expressed from their point of view as "people of the dawn" interests me.

Great job! It would seem some classes are not so fruitless after all if they can froce you to write more Narnia ;). And your Ed is great, so adept to learn new things, all the little details and oddities of the unknown. The tempter of faith. Without that curiousity at heart, it wouldn't be our Edmund.

Namárie.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for your amazing review. I think that this is my favorite Edmund piece to date, and I'm so glad that it works for other people aside from just myself. :)

I've always been fascinated with Calormen, because even when I read the books when I was younger, I almost immediately saw the connection between Calormen and the Middle East. And the Middle East has always fascinated me - I come across so much literature on it as a politics student today. I almost always write Narnia from a religious angle, and for once I wanted to explore it from a different angle, looking at a different culture that's maybe not so different after all. And of course Edmund would be the most prone to exploration.

Anyway, I ramble. But, just, guh. Thanks so much, this really made my day. :)

And that is just as easily applied to modern-day thought. That perhaps the Middle East is not comepltely different from us as we're used to believe, and that despite we've approached them the wrong way, we could someday find an understanding. Hopefully :/.

Ranting ahoy! ;) You're welcome, much!

This is fantastic! I'm only very recently getting into this fandom (haven't read much yet), but I really wanted some fic about the Pevensies interacting with the other countries, so this is GREAT. I love how this little diplomatic visit has so much going on: teaching Edmund a bit about how to be a king, what he doesn't want his people to be like, having his first taste of a very innocent-seeming kind of crush-type thing... and then the way you worked the prompt in was brilliant. Plus, this was beautifully written. Bravo!

Yay, I'm glad you liked it! Thanks so much for leaving a review that's really way too kind. :D And there's really so much great and varied stuff in the Narnia fandom, so...happy reading!

Love the realistic take on both boy and king (and on being a boy-king, come to that) its realistic what he notices both of the country and the girl.
Lovely work.
