my mom put Kiss 98.5 on the radio today on the way to work, and the morning jockeys are talking to people from the hurricane disaster zone, telling them all about how they are personally taking the time to collect food to fill up trucks and send down to the refugees. the responses to this were largely along the lines of "we thank God for the ( Read more... )

it's simple.....they thank God for the efforts made to help, just not for the hurricane.

point is, you can't hold an omnipotent god responsible only for the good things, especially when said good things are consequences of one really bad other thing.

the above was a joke...

well...my hardcore catholic mother would just say "maybe it happened to bring people together....to teach them about humanity....to find joy in what was normally taken for granted"

the old bad things happen to teach us how to appreciate the good things. therefore god in turn CAN be thanked.

had i not broken my leg, i wouldn't cherish the ability to walk and run as much.

i'm agnostic anyway, but i used to rationalize in that manner; hardships can make one humble and grateful and stronger

oh, i'm fully aware of how people rationalize that sort of thought, though i did think you were being serious. o internets what will you do next?

anyways, the above is meant to illustrate the absurdities of such thinking. while the broken leg example is pretty weak as it is, applying the same thinking to the hurricane example is downright ridiculous.

besides, who wants to worship a god who levels cities to bring a few thousand people 'together' in a sports arena for a few weeks with no running water? if that's the best he can do, he's not getting my vote. the only way i'd buy that is if within the next week he came down personally and rebuilt everyone's houses for the trouble. Given His track record, i'd guess that's not going to happen.

and on a side note, why doesn't he fucking bring the rich people together and make them grateful for some shit one of these days? i think the urban poor have had enough of god's metaphorical pep talks, but apparently most of them don't think they've had enough and insist on asking for more. go
