History: Unlike most STC characters, Espio comes from the Special Zone - a surreal pocket dimension connected to the planet Mobius through a variety of portals. His current home is located on the planet Meridian. However, as it is established that the Special Zone houses many worlds, this may not be his native planet.

Espio is a member of a team known as the Chaotix Crew, a team originally assembled to protect the Special Zone after Doctor Robotnik - who had previously used the Zone to build his empire on Mobius - vacated his base there. Quite how Espio became involved with the team isn't clear, but it is suspected that they were assembled by the sentient time and dimensional travel device known as the Omni-Viewer. Originally, there were five members of the team: Vector the Crocodile, Mighty the Armadillo, Espio the Chameleon, Charmy Bee, and Nack the Weasel. However, not long after the team was formed, Nack betrayed the team for the sake of money, and was expelled from the group.

As a team, Chaotix is rather dysfunctional. Charmy is an irritant to the entire team (though he honestly believes they're just pretending to be annoyed), but especially the easily-stressed Vector. Mighty and Espio, meanwhile, have an ongoing rivalry and often end up fighting instead of doing what they're supposed to. It's a wonder that they get anything done.

Originally based in the more bizarre regions of the Special Zone (space - a wonderful place where you can casually row your boat past a giant floating ice cube), Chaotix have since moved into a large building in New Tek City. New Tek is analogous to the cities in superhero comics, and is home to a number of superhero parodies. While Chaotix have been known to display some of the “superhero” mentality (with Mighty being particularly prone), the citizens tend to favour the garish showmanship of the parodies over Chaotix. In fact, Chaotix have never really been trusted by the citizens here - most consider them to be insane, and it's even been commented that they were probably going to turn evil.

As Chaotix consider themselves to be Guardians of the Special Zone, with Omni as a time machine, they rarely became involved in Mobius' affairs unless something from the Special Zone was directly connected to it. Enemies of particular note include the Brotherhood of Metallix, and Super Sonic. In both cases, Chaotix aided Sonic (and in one case also Knuckles the Echidna, who had been thrown into the Zone by sheer misfortune). At home, Chaotix have also been involved with a large number of superhero and supervillain parodies, including an elemental team (who ended up being mixed together and turned into a pot), and a rich CEO (who was defeated when Charmy bought out his company). They have recurring enemies in the power crazed Lord Sidewinder and his criminal gang.

Abilities & Physical Abnormalities: He's a three foot seven pink-purple lizard. He can change colour, turn invisible, and run on walls and ceilings. His "signature move" is a whirling tornado attack. He's also remarkably resiliant - he can take someone with super strength beating him over the head with a lamppost, with there being more damage to the lamppost than to him.

Personality: Typically, Espio is a person who comes off as a complete jerk. He's loud, competitive, critical, argumentative, sarcastic and short-tempered, and is perfectly willing to resort to violence. In an argument, he can be irrational and petty, and he hates to lose. He can often be found picking on the imperfections and failures of others, and is quick to judge someone based on how smart they are. If someone makes a single mistake, he will repeatedly pester them about it, as his close friend and rival Mighty can attest. He has, however, shown that he's a hypocrite, and often the mistakes he criticises the most are ones he's guilty of himself - really, he has no place to comment on people being impulsive when he has hurled himself out of a twentieth story window with a plan so vague he wasn't able to explain it.

Espio also demands attention. He likes his accomplishments to be acknowledged, and is a major show-off. Sometimes, this can be shown through his rivalry with Mighty, as he often insists that Mighty acknowledge that his performance was superior to the Armadillo's. Other times, this is shown through plain stupidity: he has a horrible tendency to give away his position by bragging about how invisible he is. He doesn't like to admit what he sees as his own failures, either, and will go to great lengths to deny them - this is usually rather unconvincing.

It's not that Espio is useless or anything. He is in fact rather intelligent, observant, and practical, and overall the most balanced of his team. He adapts easily to multiple roles, and serves Chaotix both as one of their main fighters and their usual pilot. He has some knowledge of computers, and is comfortable when handed the role of providing exposition - though granted, his take on exposition is usually brief and to the point.

Under his aggression and attention seeking behaviour, however, is a genuinely decent guy whose primary motivation seems to be to protect people. He is willing to die serving a good cause, and faces certain death with good humour - at one point, placing bets with Mighty on how many enemies they could take down before they were both killed. If someone is in genuine danger, he will throw himself into the situation to protect them. If someone is injured or otherwise needs help he will be the first to help out, sometimes even before anyone else has noticed - in one case, he even rushed to help a fallen traitor while everyone else was preoccupied. He quickly notices when something's not right with someone, and was noticeably weirded out when Mighty was acting more aggressive than normal.

Espio manages to both be a jerk and be the easiest of his team to talk to, to the point where an enemy seeking aid specifically requested his attention despite the team's leader being close by. Though it's unspoken, even Sonic (who firmly believes the entire team is insane) seems to acknowledge this, as Espio appears to be the only member of Chaotix Sonic can stand to take seriously - they never once argue, and Sonic is more inclined to be agreeable when it's Espio speaking.
