Two AM : 9
Heero was shaking the cramp out of his fingers when he heard a familiar scratching sound on his shutters. With a soft exhalation, he stood, still working the kinks out in his hand as he went over to the window and opened it to the night.
Duo set aside the long branch he'd been using to bridge the gap between his tree and the window. "Hey. You good?"
He rolled his eyes. "Since I claim to not be falling behind in my studies, I'm going to be quizzed tomorrow on both this week's and next week's material."
"What? How does that make any sense?"
"J expects me to be ahead of the curve," he said dryly. "How about you?"
"Meh, G expects me to be a troublemaker so... I've gotta babysit the greens this week."
"How does that make any sense? Aren't you just as likely to be getting them into trouble?"
Duo snorted. "It's their first for-reals lab day tomorrow. More like, let's see if I can get through this week without someone setting something or someone -- hopefully not me -- on fire."
"Luckily, you're good with fire. They're in good hands."
He fidgeted with a nearby leaf. "So, sorry for getting you in trouble and all."
Heero shook his head. "You're not sorry. Neither am I. It's not your fault J thinks you're 'riffraff', and I can hang out with whomever I want. And G should be standing up for you, too. He shouldn't be letting J insult his protégé."
"Nah, J's rude about it, but that's nothing, and frankly, most of the old guys around here are rude or weird about something or another. Long as J's not, like, sabotaging me or something, I don't care. Well, not for me, anyway. I care about you. Uh, you getting the short end of the stick. Yanno?"
Heero leaned casually on the window sill and smiled at him. "Seems like I'm going to have some free time this week, since I'm already ahead with next week's material. When do you think you can get away again?"
