Two AM : 10

Duo fell asleep feeling quite pleased with himself.  One could even say he was pleased with quite a lot of things -- from the universe at large, to all of his life choices leading up to this point.  Everything felt exactly as it should be.

Duo woke a couple hours later with a creeping sense that everything was all wrong, things should not have turned out this way, and at least one terrible mistake had been made.  He could not decide whether he should resolutely stop thinking about it, or perhaps there was nothing to think about at all.

"It's funny."  Heero's voice made him jump slightly.  The bed trembled with it, spoiling any hope he might have had of the bed's other occupant not noticing.  "I thought it'd be the other way around."

"What?" he said intelligently.  Into the thoughtful pause that followed the question, Duo's imagination jumped to an awkward conversation about sexual positions and see, I knew this was a terrible idea, this is not a conversation I ever wanted to have with Heero Yuy...

"I thought I'd be the one lying awake after."

It took a few seconds for that to soak in.  "What, you mean you aren't awake right now?" he retorted, but it was a weak effort at self-defense.  Clearly he'd dithered long enough that he'd managed to catch Heero's attention, even in sleep.

Heero was quiet for a few more seconds, during which Duo had the wild thought that maybe Heero wasn't actually awake after all.  What an absurd way to end the night...

Heero turned onto his side to face Duo.  "Well?  What's on your mind?"

Oh, Duo remembered that he had actually fallen asleep on his side, snugged up against Heero, but now here he was flat on his back and maybe him moving away had woken Heero and gah maybe Heero'd been awake the whole time Duo had been dithering...

There was movement beneath the covers, and Heero's warm hand took up residence on Duo's belly.  That simple action, that simple weight, that simple warmth, grounded Duo somewhat, as Heero's touch often did.  He took a breath, held it for a moment, and exhaled audibly, feeling Heero's hand move with him.

He put his hand on top of Heero's, tracing the bones in the back of the hand, across his knuckles and up to the fingertips before settling down.  Weird.  He thought perhaps he'd have known Heero's hand from any other, even before that hand had explored him intimately.  "Oh.  You know."

"This was hardly sudden, Duo."

He made an ambiguous sound of agreement.  "Yeah... Things have been... pulling in this direction for a while now.  And now... we're over the event horizon."

Heero's fingers flexed slightly, somehow conveying a silent chuckle.  "Black hole in a good way?"

"Gravitational forces are a bitch."  Their bodies had made it over first.  He had a fleeting thought that maybe his good sense was just now catching up to him, but no, maybe that was just all his anxieties catching up, and colliding with the back of his head.

"We still in one piece?"

He squeezed back.  "Yeah.  I guess so.  Just... needed a sec for my nerves to recover.  I'm good now.  We're good."

"We're good?"

"Yeah.  We're good.  Time to see what's on the other side, eh?"
