[CHARACTER INFO]
CHARACTER NAME: Amara Aquilla / Magma
FANDOM: Marvel 616
CHRONOLOGY: New Mutants Vol. 3 (Current)-- after their fight with Legion when Amara is recovering with Roberto in the ambulance.

BACKGROUND:
Amara is from the fictional country of Nova Roma, a colony of the Roman Republic founded after the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Ruled by the immortal witch queen Selene, the Republic is hidden in the rain forests of Brazil. Her father, a high ranking official within Nova Roma, sent Amara to hide with the indigenous Indians of Brazil after a violent power struggle between him and Selene. She was discovered by the New Mutants who were training in the rain forest and eventually Selene captured them all and attempted to sacrifice Amara by throwing her into a volcano. It was then that Amara's mutant abilities came to light and she demanded revenge. After the battle with Selene is over, Amara joined the New Mutants because her father wants her to learn to harness and control her powers.

Throughout her career as a New Mutant, she has clashed with some of the best: Selene and and the Hellfire Club (where she and Roberto were fooled into joining a gladiatorial competition run by the Shadow King) and Emma Frost and her Hellions. She begins a relationship with Empath, one of Emma's Hellions, although this ends in disaster. She also gets caught up in a plot involving the first Enchantress and Loki, where she helps the elves of Asgard attack the dwarves. Sam ends up defeating her and the dwarves restore her mind but her body is another story. Luckily after Loki is defeated all the magic is reversed and everyone gets to go home, minds and body intact.

Amara had a brief stint as a Hellion, both as a way to get close to Empath and because she finds that the witch Selene is her ancestor. While training with Empath in South America, Amara reveals that she is supposed to marry a prince. This, obviously, does not happen. She finds out that the country she was born in, Nova Roma, is not Roman but was created by Selene using mind control on British citizens to recreate Rome. As such, she finds out that her real name is not Amara Aquilla but Allison Crestmere.

Not long after this, Amara is one of the mutants found crucified on the lawn of Xavier's school. She is saved by a transfusion from Archangel but falls into a deep coma, having been traumatized by the whole event. Elixir, a mutant student with healing abilities, wakes her up before she is ready and Amara runs away in a panic. She eventually turns up again in Los Angeles and meets up with Sam (who joined a splintered X-Men team), confirming that the Allison part of her memories were indeed the fake ones and Archangel's blood and Elixir's healing helped her remove them. She decides to come back to Xavier's school and takes up Rahne's position leading the teen Mutant team the Paragons after Rahne leaves the school.

While vacationing in Guadeloupe, Amara found a new boyfriend named Antonio Argent. He was a mutant with almost the same powers as Magma. While on a date in a volcano, the "House of M consequence" took his mutant powers away. Needless to say, he burnt to a crisp. Antonio's death caused Amara to make the volcano erupt and attack a nearby town, killing two soldiers at least. She was later found by Empath and brought to the Xavier Institute where she shared a tent with Skids and Outlaw.

Sometime later, Donald Pierce, disguised as Cyclops, convinces a group of young mutants that the New Mutants are the newest incarnations of the Brotherhood of Mutants and must be taken down. During the battle, Amara turns the mutant Dust into glass by heating her sand form and shatters Rockslide. She is later held in a holding cell in the custody of "Cyclops". After Pierce is found out and capture, Amara moves to San Fransisco.

In the most recent New Mutants, Illyana returns from the future (the events of "X-Infernus") to tell Sam and Roberto that Dani and Xi'an are in trouble while on a mission to save a young mutant in Colorado. Amara was visiting Empath in his holding cell in the mansion when Sam calls her to action. She, Illyana, Bobby and Sam go on a mission to save their friends but not before Illyana slyly asks her if she still has feelings for Empath despite the fact that he tried to kill the X-Men. Amara, who stumbles to answer, tries to deny her feelings but Illyana says (in a somewhat crazy way) that she will heal him if Amara wants and it will be their little secret. All of this boils down to a fight with Legion, who plans to kill Dani because she can help get all over his personalities under control. Amara is taken out of the fight by Legion who makes her feel cold and thus cannot use her powers.

PERSONALITY:
Amara has changed significantly since she first appeared in New Mutants volume 1. When she first appeared, she was not used to technology, jokes, nicknames, or eating anything with her hands. The New Mutants, however, changed all of this for her (couples with the fact that She is a quick study and easily adapts to her surroundings.) While she is still formal to a degree (especially with strangers), Amara has grown very comfortable with her teammates Xi'an, Sam, Dani, Bobby, and Illyana. In their company, she allows herself to relax a little (especially when it comes to making commentary on Bobby's ridiculous womanizing) though she never laughs too loudly and always acts with a semblance of decorum. These days, she only wears a toga as a Halloween costume.

Mature, gentle, patient, and hard working, Amara would do anything for her friends. Even early on in the comics when she wasn't officially part of the team, she stressed the importance of helping out comrades in need. On the surface, Amara always seems unruffled no matter what the situation. However, underneath her calm exterior, she has a-- well, fiery temper. Since her powers are linked to her emotions, when Amara gets angry bad things happen. Earthquakes and volcanoes are a good example of what happens when someone pisses her off. She has since gotten better at controlling her emotions but when it comes to being manipulated emotionally or her friends being hurt, Amara can easily fly off the handle and split the ground open without a second thought.

When it comes to people she loves, Amara is somewhat a glutton for punishment. When she falls for someone, she falls hard, although it is difficult for her to express her feelings most of the time. Her love-hate (mostly hate) relationship with the mutant Empath often brings out the worst in her. She is forever accusing him of toying with her emotions (quite literally) but she is unable to bring herself to leave his side when he is blinded and injured. When Illyana brings this up to her, Amara cannot even bring herself to properly defend her actions. After the bitter end of her last boyfriend whose mutant powers vanished during M-Day (he, too, had fire powers and disintegrated while they were having a date in a volcano), Amara lost control of herself. It took Empath's emotion controlling to get her to calm down and even then, she had already melted the faces off of two soldier. There is also a hint of an attractive to the New Mutant's ladies' man Roberto but Amara can only chide him for his flirting ways and attempt to hide her jealousy at him trying to get in Rogue's pants.

Amara is very interested and knowledgeable about Roman culture and the Latin language. She also is apt with a sword. Amara hates the cold with a passion. Since her powers won't work if her body becomes too cold not to mention she grew up in a rain forest, it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to see her in a thick coat when the weather is only a bit chilly. She also enjoys fancy clothes and has expensive tastes, having grown up as the daughter of a high ranked official.
