Why my car is on crack, reason 2,012.

Today I was leaving my friends house. When I backed down his driveway I realized I had about four gallons of gas left. The needle was right in between the two and six mark. When I got home, a whole two miles away my car claimed to have exactly six gallons of gas left. What's with that?
