Neither Jenny or Eric were there, as a matter of fact; in the past few days, Chuck had taken to making himself scarce whenever anyone from home came around. With Eric, particularly, the glances that lasted a little too long and the fact that he was clearly dying to ask how Chuck was feeling were too much to take. He spent most of the day out, on the beach or in the caves, coming home late and dead drunk, when he knew the kids would be in bed already and he could pass out undisturbed, waking long after they'd already started the day. Today, finding both Jenny and Eric out of the room, he'd taken the opportunity for a shower and had just finished dressing when he heard the knock on the doorframe. One of E's friends, probably, and he scrubbed his towel over his head while he slid the curtain open, not bothering to actually glance up and see who it was. "Eric's not here, come back later."
"I'm not here to see Eric," Serena said, leaning against the doorway, brow arched. Her brother had found her on his own, after all. She doubted it had taken much effort to figure out just where she'd be staying these days. She really didn't care. The people she didn't want to see weren't about to come looking for her, not at Beat's. The others, though, she had to seek out for herself.
Chuck paused, meeting Serena's gaze and realizing that he had absolutely no idea what she was there to do. He hadn't seen her since the scene in her room, and at the time he'd had no idea what she thought of his role in the whole thing. She seemed relatively unimpressed with everyone, and he'd had no doubt that it wasn't the kind of confrontation she approved of, but he hardly could have seemed the biggest villain in that melodrama, could he?
Only one way to find out. He tossed the towel onto the bed and stood aside from the door, making way for her to enter. "Come in."
Serena nodded to him as she passed, making her way over to stand by Eric's bed. She wasn't sure she wanted to sit just yet. Chuck might be as disinclined to see her as any of the others. "I know you probably don't want to talk about it," she said, "but I just thought I'd come see how you're doing."
Glancing around the room was enough to reveal that Jenny's things were still there. She had no intention of stooping so low as to dig through Jenny's stuff, but it was an interesting development. Chuck probably saw what Jenny had done as some kind of proof of loyalty, but it was clear to Serena that it was just the opposite.
