The night of the fight, Serena had started to worry about Blair. She couldn't think of any explanation for the betrayal committed, not when Blair hated Dan, not unless it was some new sign of self-destruction, and if that were the case, then Serena had been neglecting her if she had missed the signs. If that were so, then some part of this was ( Read more... )

If there was one that Blair Waldorf excelled in, crazy fashion-challenged island or not, it was turning her heart to stone. Some people were wired to forgive and forget, to make nice and pretend things never happened. Blair was not one of those people. It didn't matter whose fault it was, or the fact that she had hid her dirty little secret to save S the pain, it was simply the fact that when she wanted to ignore the twinge of pain in her heart, she simply ignored it.

It was easier that way and something that she had a lot of practice. Everyone betrayed everyone else, why not be ready for the consequences? Adjusting a bit of garnish on her tree, she didn't turn to see who it was. "Come in," she called.

Serena closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Just because she could understand why Blair wouldn't want to forgive her didn't mean she was looking forward to hearing it firsthand, and in that moment, with her fate before her, it no longer felt like there was anything else to face. She wanted to turn and run - better never knowing, surely - but she'd done it before. She couldn't keep doing that, no matter how much she wanted to.

Brushing back the curtain, she stepped timidly into the room. "B," she said, voice low, tight, hands twisted together in front of her. "B, I'm so sorry." They'd both said worse before, but she'd left her to the wolves right after.

Hearing who it was, Blair froze mid-action, her fingers lingering on the branch of the tree. It wasn't that she wasn't sorry as well, because she was, it just hurt too much to admit it. There was no level of eating and crying and hollowing herself out again that could fix it.

"You left," she finally said, quieter than she had meant it to be, before turning around. "I didn't want to tell you because I didn't want to hurt you and you just...left me. We could have fixed it, but now...it's a mess."

"I know," she said, shaking her head as she moved her way to B, not yet daring to reach out to her like she wanted to. "I know, I shouldn't - I shouldn't have left you like that, but I didn't know how to handle it except to run away. And then I was too scared to come back." Even she knew how foolish that was now. It hadn't worked last time she'd done it. There was no reason for her to believe it would now.
