that tire analogy is a bit misleading. a more appropriate way to say that would be that, at any instant, partof the tire is motionless. if you watch any wheel that is rolling, the center of the wheel moves at the same velocity as the rest of the car. the top of the wheel moves at twice that speed and the part of the wheel touching the ground is motionless. it's simply an algebraic result of adding rotational and translational motion. so the next time you're watching a wheel spin (any wheel), notice how the top of the wheel is very blurry and the bottom is quite the opposite. the moral still holds true. sometimes you're moving at double-speed, and sometimes you have to stop. there is a periodicity here that i like. symmetry, balance, if you will. also, you are gorgeous and physics is silly :) pants.
