Try to figure out what the motivation for going on the dining room is. Is the litter changed frequently enough?
I've never had a real problem with my cats doing that. One of them will do it on the linoleum in the winter for some reason, but only several times during the winter.
The boxes (3 of them) are scooped daily and changed out regularly; as well, the cats are allowed on the patio where they'll crouch on the rocky ground cover (hosed almost daily). I guess one of them might be sick - it will be hard to determine until I figure out who is messing. For now I've cleaned it up and sprayed some pet repellant around the area.
I feel like I should install a hidden camera to catch the culprit!
Our old cat suddenly started peeing indoors, and it turned out to be a kidney infection. The problem is that, once cats start peeing indoors, the smell makes them think it's okay to go there, so you'll probably need to deep-clean the carpet. In short, figure out who the culprit it is, take it to the vet, then deep-clean the carpet.
