10 Settings Challenge: #1 - Lake

The sunlight reflected off the lake as Kyuhyun closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling of floating on the water. He reached out, and his fingers brushed against the surface of the lake. Faintly, he heard his hyungs’ laughter and yelling from a distance. He barely caught the words “Hyung, Donghae stole my pancakes again!”

This is why he liked visiting the lake. It was great being with Super Junior, but he wanted some time to himself too, away from the constant presence of his fellow members. He didn’t understand how they could constantly be on a high. It was insane. Kyuhyun liked to play pranks and tricks too (how could he not? He’s the maknae after all), but it got tiring after long schedules and activities.

He took out his iPod and listened to the voice of his hyung, of Jongwoon, and quietly closed his eyes with a smile. Only in the security of being surrounded by water, by solitude, could he really admit how much he loved the deep, husky sound of Jongwoon’s voice.

It was much nicer out here on the lake.

---

“Where’s my Kyu?” Sungmin asked around. Jongwoon scoffed at the “my”. Trust Sungmin to be possessive over the maknae.
“You should know. You’re his roommate.” Sungmin stared at Jongwoon with his puppy eyes. Jongwoon sighed. “How have you not noticed that he always takes the boat out and relaxes on the lake?”
“Oh yeah! Hmm, nevermind then! Wookie wanna play cards with me?”
“Sure!”

Jongwoon continued to read his book, but he couldn’t help glancing out onto the lake, where Kyuhyun was. He wondered what the maknae was doing out there on the water. He couldn’t help worrying about Kyuhyun - somehow, the dongsaeng quietly became his favorite among the others in Super Junior, and he cared about Kyuhyun more than he let others realize.

He wasn’t allowed to delve too deeply into his feelings.

Sipping his coffee, he continued to read.

---

It was 4 in the afternoon, and the other boys had started packing - they needed to head back to Seoul. Jongwoon looked around, and realized that Kyuhyun wasn’t back yet.
“You guys go on ahead. I’ll wait for that pabo maknae of ours. Manager hyung just called me and told me my schedule got cancelled, so it’ll be alright.”
“Hyung, will you be okay with the food? Neither of you can cook…” Ryeowook looked at Jongwoon worriedly. Jongwoon laughed, and ruffled Ryeowook’s hair.
“Don’t worry about us Wookie, we’ll manage.”

With that, Jongwoon returned to his reading in peace and quiet as the others left. He didn’t like to be alone, but he had to wait for Kyuhyun.

---

The sun started to set as the sky was painted with colors of pink, yellow, orange and red.
Kyuhyun returned to the lake house reluctantly as he realized it was going to become dark soon.

As he trudged back up to the house, he looked around in confusion.
Strange. It was oddly peaceful.

“Kyu-ah, you’re back! The other members had schedules, so it’s just the two of us.” Jongwoon smiled and greeted Kyuhyun when he walked onto the porch of the lake house. Jongwoon gestured at the chair next to him. Kyuhyun sat down and looked out at the surface of the lake with him. Kyuhyun smiled. He could only share silence with Jongwoon. He closed his eyes, and enjoyed the simplicity of just being together with him.

Suddenly, he felt a poke. He opened his eyes and looked straight into Jongwoon’s unfaltering gaze. He felt a tug of emotion, but willed it back. He couldn’t let Jongwoon know about how much he cared, how much he loved the hugs they shared. How he was thrilled every time they held hands on stage. He looked back at the lake. The colors reflected off the water.

Such a romantic scene.

“It is, isn’t it? I’m glad I’m sharing this with you though…” Kyuhyun looked away, a little embarrassed by the fact that he spoke his thoughts aloud, but Jongwoon smiled and ruffled Kyuhyun’s hair. Kyuhyun’s heart skipped a beat as he realized what Jongwoon was implying. He likes sharing this scene with me…

Jongwoon frowned as he realized how dangerously close he was to admitting his feelings for his dongsaeng. Quickly, he added “The others wouldn’t have been able to appreciate this.”, and just managed to catch Kyuhyun’s disappointment before the younger masked his emotions.

“Kyu, you’re special to me. You know that, right?”

Kyuhyun sighed. “Of course. I’m the maknae.”

“Even if you weren’t, you’re special to me.” Jongwoon smiled, and Kyuhyun stared at how perfect his hyung was. His unrequited love.

“Hyung, you’re special to me too.” Kyuhyun quietly whispered. Jongwoon looked at Kyuhyun, and tried to resist the urge to lean over and kiss him. His unrequited love.

Instead, he placed a hand on Kyuhyun’s hand, and looked out at the lake. It was all he could do. He had to be happy with the status quo.

Kyuhyun stared at the small hand on top of his, and felt his heart warm up from the contact. He looked back at the lake, and enjoyed the presence of Jongwoon. It was all he was allowed to do. He had to be content with the status quo.

A/N: No more character deaths! Wooo! I'm not quite sure what genre this would go under...hence the omission. I realize that I focus a lot more on setting for the 10 Settings challenge (and I really like descriptive writing too...), so there isn't as much character interaction. Hope that's okay with all of you. Hopefully that'll change for some of the others heh. 2 down, 8 more to go (and possibly a bonus one if I'm feeling ambitious). Comments and love are appreciated!
