10 Settings Challenge: #9 - Backyard
Sometimes, Kyuhyun didn’t understand Jongwoon at all. The pet turtles, love for philtrums and bug collecting were things he slowly grew accustomed to, but there were times when he still didn’t understand his hyung. He sighed and moved the tent out to the backyard. Why was a camping trip so important anyways?
“Kyu! I got the poles, we can set the tent up!” Jongwoon happily exclaimed.
Kyuhyun noted that Jongwoon’s mood was much better now. A few hours ago, Jongwoon was still cursing and slamming doors when he heard that Kyuhyun had an early schedule tomorrow morning. They had been planning a camping trip for around a month now, but every single time they were about to leave for the forest, a schedule would pop up and ruin their plans. This was the fifth weekend that Jongwoon wanted to go, but Kyuhyun had an unexpected recording he had to do the next day. Jongwoon was so upset, and had locked himself in his room for hours. The other members had tried to talk to Jongwoon, but he ignored all of them. Finally, Kyuhyun had knocked on his door and suggested camping out in the backyard of Jongwoon’s parents' place instead. It was far enough from Seoul to be considered as rural, but close enough for Kyuhyun to rush back for his event tomorrow.
Kyuhyun chuckled as he remembered how Jongwoon had poked his head out, with puffy eyes, and glared at him.
“It’s not the same.”
“But we’re Super Junior, hyung. We’re always busy.”
Jongwoon had finally agreed to camp in the backyard.
---
“So we’ve got the tent set up, the sleeping bags, everything. What now hyung?”
Kyuhyun looked at Jongwoon expectantly. It was Jongwoon’s original idea to go camping. He had refused to go with anyone other than Kyuhyun, and insisted that only the two of them were going camping. Ryeowook had initially tried to object, but Leeteuk told Ryeowook that he was needed in the dorms to cook, or else the other 10 members of Super Junior were going to starve to death.
Jongwoon had allowed Kyuhyun to choose the location, and told the maknae to “leave it up to him” to plan the events.
“Well, first we were going to go hiking…but since it’s dark already…”
“Whose fault would that be? You were locked in your room for four hours hyung. Four hours!”
“I was upset!” Jongwoon pouted, and Kyuhyun shook his head. He was supposed to be the maknae, but Jongwoon sometimes had the maturity of a six year old.
Soon, they set up their grill, and roasted the beef that Jongwoon had packed (or rather, found in his mother’s kitchen). The scent of food filled the whole backyard, and even Jongwoon’s dog Kkoming ran out and tried to beg for some meat. Jongwoon started singing, and Kyuhyun joined in. Harmonizing voices cut through the silent air. Their gazes met, and both of them smiled.
Both Kyuhyun and Jongwoon devoured their food. Sulking for four hours was tiring work, and it was even more tiring trying to talk someone out of sulking for four hours. After dinner, they cleaned up after themselves, and lied down on the grass. As they talked about their debut days, and their lives before Super Junior, Jongwoon laced his fingers with Kyuhyun’s. The younger one didn’t think too much of it - Jongwoon was the king of skinship after all. But the simple action made Kyuhyun’s heart flutter.
Suddenly, Jongwoon jumped up and pulled Kyuhyun off from the grass.
“Wait here! I have a surprise!” With that, he left Kyuhyun by himself in the yard. Kyuhyun looked up at the full moon, and smiled. He was enjoying his time with Jongwoon alone. He was worried that it might be awkward at first, since Jongwoon was so unpredictable, but he was having a great time. Faintly, he heard the sound of cackling, and he turned around. Jongwoon was standing there with sparklers and an excited, childish expression on his face.
“Kyu-ah, let’s play with these! I haven’t lit one in years!” All Kyuhyun could think about was how handsome Jongwoon looked when his eyes sparkled. The two boys returned to their childhood, chasing each other around the backyard and lighting up the night sky.
---
Later that night, they sat side by side at the entrance of the tent, looking out at the stars. No words were spoken, but the two of them didn’t need any. They enjoyed the silence. Jongwoon kept sneaking glances at Kyuhyun, but Kyuhyun was oblivious and immersed in his own little world. Jongwoon suddenly cleared his throat, catching the attention of the maknae.
“Kyuhyun, I have something for you.” Jongwoon took out a box from his bag, and gave it to Kyuhyun. Just as Kyuhyun was about to open it, Jongwoon placed a hand over Kyuhyun’s, stopping him.
“I…like you.” Kyuhyun looked at his hyung, puzzled. Did Jongwoon finally lose his mind?
“Hyung I know you do, I like you too.” He replied patiently. He really needed to get his friend’s head checked soon.
“No Kyu. I like you…as more than a dongsaeng. I don’t know when it started, but that doesn’t matter. I care about you…a lot. You mean a lot to me.” Kyuhyun stared at him, as he took a deep breath and continued rambling on.
“I wanted to confess to you for ages, but our camping trip kept on getting cancelled! I know this is crazy, and I know you might not feel the same way, but...I want you to know that you mean a lot to me. I want to sleep to the sound of your breathing, and wake in the morning light with you next to me…I want to be able to…”
Kyuhyun’s heart lurched as he listened to Jongwoon’s confession. He could tell that his hyung was nervous as he listened to Jongwoon rant on and on. Kyuhyun moved forwards and placed his lips on Jongwoon’s, effectively shutting him up.
---
The next morning, the two of them packed the tent up. Kyuhyun looked around the backyard, smiling as his hand fiddled with the headphone necklace that Jongwoon gave him in the box. It was a symbol of their love, as Jongwoon had a matching necklace too.
This place, a somewhat ordinary backyard, was now filled with beautiful memories, from both before and after Jongwoon’s sudden confession. He felt Jongwoon’s arms wrap around him from behind, and enjoyed the warmth.
A/N: I've been posting a lot lately - trying to get as much of the 10 Setting challenge done as soon as possible before all my finals come in. The last two were either really tragic or bittersweet, so I decided to write this one in a more positive light (back to confession fics again...). Somewhat inspired by the 2004 drama Full House (that ending scene with Rain & Song Hye Gyo), although I tweaked it somewhat. As usual, comments & love appreciated!
