10 Settings Challenge: #4 - In the Rain
It always seemed to rain when hearts were broken. It’s as if the heavens themselves wept for the couple.
The pitter-patter of rain mocked Kyuhyun as he stormed out of the building, away from the dorms and away from him. He would end up strangling Jongwoon if he saw his annoying, frustrating, perfect face.
He was dripping wet, but he didn’t care.
Cho Kyuhyun never cries. It was obviously just the rain that was wetting his cheeks.
Cho Kyuhyun cries for no man, especially not Jongwoon, that idiot of a man who has his heart securely in his hands.
Maybe Kyuhyun was the idiot for giving it to him in the first place.
He doesn’t know where he’s walking to, but all he knows is that he needs to get away. Away from Jongwoon, from the dorm and away from people, period.
The leaves rustled at the impact of the rain. It didn’t look like it would stop anytime soon. The skies darkened. Kyuhyun feels his heart clench as it started to thunder overhead.
It wasn’t unusual for the two of them to fight, but they’ve never fought like this before. And over Choi Siwon, no less. Although they had to keep their relationship a secret from the public, Kyuhyun was upset over the amount of skinship that his boyfriend, his and not anyone else’s, had with Siwon. Going online and seeing all the fangirls’ support for the “Yewon” pairing had broken something in Kyuhyun.
Shouts. Accusations. Insults thrown at each other.
A slammed door.
Kyuhyun left the dorm before anyone could see how broken he really was.
Siwon had tried to explain, Ryeowook had tried to follow him, Leeteuk had tried to stop him from leaving. But Jongwoon had just shut his door, retreating into their room. He didn’t care that Kyuhyun was out in the pouring rain.
Although Kyuhyun had never admitted it, he always felt insecure with Jongwoon. Despite how much his fans loved him, despite how he’s always been told that he’s one of the most attractive in Super Junior, he has always felt like he’s not good enough for Jongwoon. Even after dating for 7 months, Kyuhyun would always wake up, afraid that it has all been a dream. When he opens his eyes in the morning and sees that he’s alone, he worries that Jongwoon is bored with him. He’s afraid of being the one who will be left behind.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and to Kyuhyun, Jongwoon was absolutely flawless. He often reprimanded himself for being just like those crazy fangirls (and fanboys). Even if Kyuhyun wasn’t part of Super Junior, he knows he still would have fallen for Jongwoon and pined away for him. His voice, his looks, his personality. Absolutely flawless.
The nights together were absolutely, for lack of a better word, magical. Touches, feathery kisses and moments when their two bodies fused into one. If it weren’t for Kyuhyun’s sore body the day after, he would’ve sworn it was all imagination. He loved it when they made love, and woke up together in each other’s arms. Jongwoon’s arms gave him security.
But he would always ask himself - how long would the bliss last?
It had always felt surreal.
He tried to hold back his jealousy - they were idols. Heck, they were Super Junior. They were supposed to be providing fan service. They were only where they were because of their fans’ tireless support and love. But for once, Cho Kyuhyun’s heart spoke louder than his head. He was unhappy when Siwon had carried Jongwoon. Unhappier when Jongwoon went and gave Siwon a back hug. Fucking furious when Jongwoon had kissed Siwon onstage.
To get back at him, Kyuhyun did the first thing that came to mind. He flirted with Donghae. He carried Ryeowook on his back. He shared a steamy kiss with Sungmin. He wanted to know that Jongwoon was also capable of being jealous, of caring about him. Kyuhyun had always felt like he was the only one who truly cared in the relationship.
Kyuhyun can still taste the blood from Jongwoon’s last kiss. It was meant to hurt him, meant to convey all the anger that Jongwoon had. He can still remember the fusion of disappointment and fury in Jongwoon’s eyes. He was in shock at the time - never had Jongwoon kissed him so violently. Jongwoon never lost his temper with Kyuhyun. Never.
He can remember how his chest pained, and how Jongwoon just walked away.
He closed his eyes as he collapsed in the rain. He couldn’t take it anymore. His whole body ached for Jongwoon.
He had always doubted Jongwoon’s love for him, and now that doubt had caused him to throw away the most precious thing to him. He doesn’t know how to fix what has happened between the two of them.
Maybe just staying here and drowning in the rain wasn’t such a bad idea after all.
Faintly he heard the splash of water, the sound of footsteps in the rain. He hoped that whoever it is, he left him alone to be swallowed by his own misery. He deserved it, especially after all the things he called Jongwoon. The sound of the rain obliterates all other sounds.
Security. He felt arms wrap around him, supporting him. He didn’t want to open his eyes. It was surely just his imagination, nothing more.
“Kyu-ah, what are we doing to us?” A hoarse whisper in his ear.
He opened his eyes slowly, and saw Jongwoon. Tears started welling up in his eyes.
No. It was the raindrops that landed near his eyes. Cho Kyuhyun doesn’t cry.
Jongwoon was soaking wet, and his eyes were red and puffy. He was crying, sobbing uncontrollably. Kyuhyun raised a hand, mesmerized, and wipes the tears away.
It was still raining. The droplets wouldn’t stop falling.
Jongwoon held Kyuhyun in his arms.
Neither of them said a word. Jongwoon buried his face into Kyuhyun’s wet hair, still shaking. Kyuhyun stared dumbly into space, as his heart broke even more from Jongwoon’s tears. Or was it the rain? Kyuhyun couldn’t tell anymore.
All he knew was that both of them were hurting.
And he realized how stupid he was to believe that Jongwoon didn't care.
“Hyung…I’m sorry.”
It suddenly stopped pouring, and instead the raindrops gently fell to the earth. The skies cleared slightly.
A shower to heal.
“Kyu-ah, I’m sorry too. Let’s not do this to each other anymore, okay?” Jongwoon brushed his thumb across Kyuhyun’s bleeding lip, and leaned in to kiss him gently.
The droplets stopped falling.
“I’ll stop doubting.”
“You better do that. I love you, and only you. I was hurt that you thought otherwise.”
“I know now. I’ll never do it again. And…I love you too.”
The smell of petrichor, of the earth after the rain, was the only thing that registered in Kyuhyun’s brain as the two of them walked back to the dorm together in silence, dripping wet, hand in hand. Jongwoon’s fingers were laced with Kyuhyun’s.
The sun had snuck out, and the skies were blue once more.
Leeteuk had fussed over the two of them when they returned. Siwon had anxiously looked from one to the other, but once he saw their hands linked together, he breathed a sigh of relief. Ryeowook marched into the kitchen and started to make warm soup for the two of them.
Fans were bewildered when the news came out that Super Junior’s Yesung and Kyuhyun were unable to attend their events for a week due to an illness. Jongwoon and Kyuhyun had both gotten high temperatures that night, and the management team had insisted on having them recover fully before performing. They were off schedule for an entire week, and several performances were cancelled.
Jongwoon was delighted when they were told that they needed to stay at the dorms and recover. He informed the others were to not disturb them, and he eagerly dragged Kyuhyun into their room.

A/N: I have no idea what this was inspired by, and I don't remember most of the process of writing - I imagined a scenario, and just typed stuff out. I guess I was influenced by Coldplay's Fix You (absolutely beautiful song ;_;). Working off the idea of pathetic fallacy (when the weather reflects the mood of the character). I hope you guys all understand the denial that Kyuhyun's going through with the tears and all. I'm quite ambiguous at times - you guys can fill in the blanks :) I don't know, this was just really all over the place with no particular structure. Hope you guys still give it as much love though! Comments & critique appreciated!
On a side note: Yewon is my second favorite Yesung pairing.
Petrichor is the smell of the earth after rain - it's one of the 100 most beautiful words in the English language.
