10 Settings Challenge: #2 - On the Roof

Being on the roof at midnight always made him feel like a complete creeper. But he couldn’t stay away, no matter how hard he tried. It was a habit that he developed a few years ago, and has stuck with him ever since. He sighed, and looked down at the playground outside their dorm, searching for that familiar figure. Jongwoon was in black tday, making it harder for him to be spotted in the dark, but he had his favorite red scarf wrapped around his neck, which gave his location away. He watched as the man sat on top of the slide, staring off into the distance.

He felt that strange mixture of emotions, the triple knotting of his heartstrings as he observed. He watched Jongwoon sigh from a distance, and imagined what it would be like to kiss that frown away.

The moon and stars had kept his secret for many, many years.
---

A streetlight nearby flickered, cutting through Jongwoon’s thoughts. The playground had always been a place of comfort and peace. Although he enjoyed the presence of his band-mates, he needed a respite from the hype that came in the form of Super Junior. At first, he just needed some personal space, and the playground was close and accessible. It soon became habitual, and everyone knew that Jongwoon could be found in the playground at midnight. Leeteuk had fussed about Jongwoon being alone so late, but Jongwoon convinced Leeteuk that he needed the space. Alone.

He sat on top of the slide, and looked up at the moon. He envied it - it shone so brightly in the night sky. But it looked so lonely up there.

“At least I have Super Junior members, right Ddangkoma?”

The turtle blinked. Jongwoon smiled and imagined that the turtle was saying yes.

He sighed, and played with his necklace. Headphones.
Kyuhyun had only worn the necklace he gave him once. Jongwoon had assumed that the maknae didn’t return his feelings, and started to put up protective barriers around his heart. He didn’t want lose Kyuhyun’s friendship, but at the same time he couldn’t allow himself to be hurt by unrequited love.

He refused to pine away for a man who didn’t love him back.

---

Kyuhyun clenched the headphone necklace tightly in his hand, placing it at his heart. He was still up on the roof, watching Jongwoon. Watching Jongwoon in the dorms was killing him little by little. Although Jongwoon had still spoilt him and adored him as he used to, Kyuhyun could sense that his hyung had started to distance himself slowly.

Jongwoon was his, and only his, when he was in the playground and Kyuhyun was watching him silently.

He couldn’t pinpoint the exact moment when he started to love Jongwoon, but at some point, he realized that he felt more than just friendship during their bickering, their skinships and their late nights at the studio. The weird, turtle-loving hyung with the heavenly voice had somehow started to push his way into Kyuhyun’s heart.

Kyuhyun was terrified.

Kim Jongwoon. Kyuhyun whispered the name quietly to himself. Saranghae. A murmur. The words he could not bring himself to say.

He looked at his watch. 12:18am. Jongwoon would be returning to the dorm in 12 minutes. Leeteuk had made it clear that Jongwoon was only allowed to spend 30 minutes out in the playground, or else he would assume that Jongwoon was kidnapped by rabid fangirls.

Sometimes, Kyuhyun wishes that he was a fangirl. At least he would feel more justified for being on the roof, essentially stalking Jongwoon. He would also feel less creepy for the "Starcraft" folder on his laptop that contained more than 4000 photos of Jongwoon.

He closed his eyes, and allowed himself the guilty pleasure of imagining an alternate reality. Jongwoon would still be in the playground for another 12 minutes. He could afford to spend a few minutes dreaming that he wasn’t in love alone.

---

The swings creaked as the wind revolved in the sky. Jongwoon checked his cellphone. 12:15am.  He was still allowed 15 more minutes out of the dorm.

Sometimes, Jongwoon wondered what it would have been like being a normal, ordinary person. What if his mother never signed him up for the SM audition? What if he never attended it? He missed his long conversations with Kyuhyun whenever he doubted his decisions, and the maknae would always look into Jongwoon’s eyes.

“Hyung. Your voice is so amazing, so beautiful, that it would be a waste to not share it with the world. You made the right decision. You’re here now, with us, aren’t you? Doesn’t it feel right?”

He admired Kyuhyun’s certainty that what he wanted was being an idol. Kyuhyun had been an anchor of sorts throughout the years. The maknae was always there when Jongwoon had wavered; when Jongwoon felt like he was drowning in doubt, Kyuhyun had pulled him back to the surface.

But he couldn’t allow himself to become too dependent on Kyuhyun.

Kim Jongwoon. Saranghae.

A whisper carried by the wind.

Jongwoon looked up, and his eyes fell upon the roof. He didn’t know why, but he needed to go up there. Something beyond him was pulling him towards the rooftop.

12:18 am.
He had 12 minutes to find out what was on that rooftop.

---

Kyuhyun opened his eyes and checked his watch again.

12:22 am. 8 more minutes until he had to go back to the dorm and pretend that Jongwoon was just another hyung that he didn’t feel anything other than friendship for.

Just another hyung.

He looked out onto the playground to indulge himself in watching Jongwoon again for another few minutes.

Empty. There was no trace of Jongwoon on the playground. Far off in the distance, the hoot of an owl could be heard. A couple was laughing and talking while walking along the street, stopping only to kiss under the streetlamp.

But Jongwoon was no longer there.

Kyuhyun kept trying to find traces of the red scarf, the one he had given his hyung on Christmas two years ago. Jongwoon never spent less than thirty minutes in the playground. He just had to be out there somewhere.

“Damn it, where did he go?”

He blood froze as he heard a husky voice behind him.

“Kyuhyun? What are you doing up here?”

---

Jongwoon had never been up on the roof before, so it was weird that he suddenly had this urge to go up. The elevator didn’t have access to the roof, but he shrugged it off and headed for the stairs. He had felt a tug on his heartstrings towards the roof, and he intended to find out what it was.

He had always been a closet romantic, and he couldn’t help but feel that something was leading him to the roof for a reason. But…why the roof? It was inexplicable, but Jongwoon intended to find out.

The door to the roof was already ajar. He quietly stepped out onto the roof and closed the door behind him. It wasn’t as empty as he thought it would be. A familiar figure stood there, looking down towards the ground, unaware of the extra person on the roof.

Oh shit, please don’t tell me he’s going to jump…

“Damn it, where did he go?”

A million thoughts raced through Jongwoon’s head. Jongwoon took a deep breath. His voice sounded surprisingly steady.

“Kyuhyun? What are you doing here?”

He saw the maknae stiffen and slowly turn around. The look on Kyuhyun’s face seemed to be a mixture of surprise and guilt, not unlike the look of a naughty child who had been caught doing something wrong. Then again, Kyuhyun was a naughty child.

“Jongwoonie hyung…nothing. I was doing nothing. Uh, just admiring the night view? Haha…”

A weak laugh trying to pass it off. Jongwoon walked over to where Kyuhyun was to see this night view he was admiring. He could sense how tense Kyuhyun was, but he pretended to not notice and looked out. He saw a clear view of the playground where he was a few minutes ago. The playground where he was every night, without fail.

The wings of his heart became unclipped, and he allowed himself to hope.

“Are you stalking me?”
It was a strange question, but Jongwoon hoped that the answer was a simple three-lettered word.

---

Damn it, he knows now.

The secret was out. Kyuhyun weakly tried to deny that he had been stalking, but he knew it was useless.

“Hyung, it’s…not what you think.” He threw his hands out, and the necklace he forgot that he was holding flew out.

Good one Kyuhyun. Just perfect. As if you couldn’t be more discreet.

Jongwoon leaned over and picked up the necklace, with a look of disbelief. Kyuhyun covered his face with his hands. He couldn’t bear to see the disgust that will soon show on his hyung’s face.

“So this is why I felt the need to come up here…”

Kyuhyun dug his face even deeper into his hands. He felt smaller, rough hands gently removing his hands from his face, and he looked up into Jongwoon’s eyes.

“Kyuhyun…do you love me?”

Jongwoon, I’ve been in love with you for years.

Silence. There was a weird awkward silence hanging in the air. Kyuhyun looked away when Jongwoon’s gaze was too much to bear.

“Kyuhyun?”

The sound of traffic. The sound of Jongwoon’s breathing. And finally, the sound of Kyuhyun’s voice.

“Yes…I love you hyung. I’m sorry. I’m sorry for stalking you too…but I couldn’t help myself. I’m…sorry. I won’t let it bother us. Let’s pretend that nothing ever happened…”

He looked up at Jongwoon. A dorky grin was plastered on Jongwoon’s face. Kyuhyun has never seen anything so beautiful, but he couldn’t help but feel confused. Jongwoon looked like he just won the lottery rather than finding out that a dongsaeng stalks him.

“Kyu-ah, why are you so cute?”

What?

Next thing Kyuhyun knows, he’s wrapped in Jongwoon’s arms on that cold winter’s night. He closes his eyes as he enjoys the feeling of being surrounded by Jongwoon scent, Jongwoon’s warmth, Jongwoon.

A husky whisper in his ear tickles him, and he smiles.
“I love you too."

---

The first snow of the year started to fall gently down.

On the roof of a building somewhere in Seoul, two men were wrapped in each other, enjoying the warmth of simply being together. One of them leaned up and placed a chaste kiss on the other.

The taller one looked towards the door, and noticed that it was closed.

“Hyung, did…you close the door?"
“Yeah"
“…It locks from the inside.”
The shorter one shrugged.
“I guess you’re stuck with me on the roof for a little longer then…”
