While it is sort of anonymous, they still have friends. You know, people on their friends list, both friends in RL and in just lj that they dont want to know such things. People look at the communities and then start to ask questions.
I know this as a fact because I get asked all the time "why the hell are you in turtlecocks?!" (this community seems to be the one most questioned, though I get asked about others too).
