Dear me, it's good to see the Gadruian have employed a voice of sanity as regards education, as have, apparently, Labour.

Mr Preece, do read this, as it's relevant and interesting to that discussion we had last week.

I don't know whether I'm in favour of a Bac style qualification. I favour a broader education, to be sure, but I'm not entirely sure that the teaching system, the schools and teachers could handle a transition to that sort of education.

Maybe I'm wrong.

I don't like the Bac, it keeps it too broad, and students lose focus very easily. Jack of all trades, master of none scenario. I think it's to blame for the higher dropout rate of students at university in other EU countries: students enrol on a course, but don't know how hard it's going to be because they never went into it in as much depth in the bac ( ... )

A-levels are great if you know what you want to do. I would have hated A-levels. I probably would have chosen Eco, History and German. Or maybe Eco, History and ICT. By the end of two years, I would have thrown up at the mere thought of supply and demand, not to mention having to write an essay about Hitler's path to war or some such. IB/Bac is great if you want to keep exploring your options. With hindsight, the fact I was forced to do a science, a maths and a language kept me sane, provided a nice distraction from the topics I thought I wanted to do ( ... )
