Adult Books Suck. (Mostly)

Feb 05, 2010 21:31

When I was a wee reader, I couldn't wait until the day that I would be allowed to read adult books- literature with a number on the NYT Bestseller list and blurbs that touted the books as "FASCINATING.", "THRILLING", and "A NONSTOP ADVENTURE."

Now that I can read these books, I can think of only one thing: Adult Books suck. Not all of them, but a ( Read more... )

Yeah, I dunno, some classics and thought-provoking junk books and satire can be fun, but why do people go to so much trouble to read books to seem smart instead of for enjoyment? Mostly in regards to school lit choices...No one in my school enjoyed Great Expectations, so why are they still teaching it? They know most of the kids just Sparknote all the shit that's shoveled into their laps, so why not try books that high schoolers might actually get into and learn to love reading from? I mean, we readers definitely have a good time with books, and statistics show that our vocabulary and writing is stronger. That's not to say that people who are not bookworms can not have better language than people who are, but yeah, there's too much importance placed on the idea of books' value, and not enough on what they're actually worth to people.
But then, that's life, we love our kid books, THE MAN or THE SYSTEM or SOCIETY just hasn't caught up...

The great thing is, as any children's lit enthusiast will tell you, books can be fun AND thought provoking without being clearly written for the sake of 'style' and praise.

No one in my school enjoyed Great Expectations,

I loathed that book.

I've stopped spark noting. I have devised methods to not read the book at all, and still get an A in the class. Why read when it doesn't interest me, and I don't need to? Analyzing literature is all about making connections and critiques, and anyone who's picked up How to read Literature Like a Professor and has a little practice can analyze anything. I literally came into class one day (having been gone the day before) and ( ... )

xD I don't mind creepers OR friends.

My journal tends towards:

1.) Random rawring because sometimes life sucks BD
2.) Music-y things.
3.) fanfic/my Avatar: Roleplay. BD

BUT IDK, I'M ALWAYS TRYING TO THROW IN SOMETHING INTERESTING LIKE THIS IN HERE. xD

:x I'm a bottom feeder when it comes to J/K/C-pop. Like, I ttly just watch to see whatever my friends are listening to xD; It's cool if you want to be like "DID YOU LISTEN TO _________? IF NOT YOU SHOULD." XD

I listen to all music like, at least once. I just snabbed this cool Okinawan themed fanmix the other day too >>

~~FRIENDED~~

oh look, my Creeper!turdle icon, just for you. ;D

Oh man, I totally don't mind creepers on this post. XD
It's fun- I sort of intended for that to happen when I made it public and not my regular friends only. I actually did read the Supernaturalist :D (I like Eoin Colfer) and I did like it. I've actually been meaning to re-read "The Wishlist" by him as well.

:D YAY I LOVE WHEN I SORT PEOPLE "RIGHT". Have you seen your common room yet? I'm still fairly new to HiH in general, but sorting is fun for me. I try to explain a little why I vote each way but sometimes I end up just going "YOU JUST ARE OKAY?" xD Lol.
