Notes: for atti and riko. written originally as a response to Billy's capetastic stroll through suburban New Jersey, it never got finished until atti prompted this on the B/T PDA ficmeme. it kind of works. apologies to devo for stealing the title.

( If there’s one thing Teddy knows about it - it’s how to be cool. Or at least, how to pretend to be cool. Turns out there’s a huge difference after the fact, but only if they catch you pretending. )

Okay, I gotta say! Putting aside all the things in this that make go AWWW and giggle contentedly, probably the bit I like most is this:

If anybody were to ever ask Teddy, he’d joke and say pretending to be cool was his superpower.

But in the end, nobody does. So Teddy just keeps it to himself.

It's just so Teddy and so ouch right in the chest. Like all bitter and kind of self-aware of how pathetic he feels it is but like he can't really help himself either? And wanting to share it but feeling like no one else would be interested? Which in turn is so teenager.

I dunno. I just love that little bit. I think it encapsulates in three sentences such a true, real sentiment that I am still young enough to remember feeling myself too.

leave it to you to find my brief flash of emoboat teddyaltman!is!a!woobiness, huh, riko? i think originally the story was much more blatantly TEDDY IS A POSER AND HE KNOWS IT BUT HE CAN'T STOP ANYWAY BECAUSE HE'D RATHER BE A POSER THAN LONELY but in the end i was like alsjdfa no it should be about how dorky billy kaplan is and that i love him. which, i know, laaaaaame, but it pretty much is the fundamental reason why i love YA so much.

so.

crap, i think i just tl;dr'ed a little bit. SORRY, but i'm glad that you like it and i'm also glad that there IS a bit of that aspect mixed in somewhere, simply because i always DO see billy as an important force in teddy's life when it comes to those issues.

Dorks doooorks. X3 I agree with riko, the line about being cool as his superpower was just very teenager and very Teddy, all locked up inside himself.
