Takashi blinked at the clock. 6:25 in the morning. Saturday. The fact that it was Saturday didn’t really mean anything to him - with his schedule, he usually worked every day, regardless - but today, his morning appointment had been cancelled, and there had been no time to schedule something else in it’s place, so he’d actually been planning to sleep in.
He sighed, staring up at the ceiling, and tried to summon energy necessary to roll over, pick up his phone, and figure out who on earth had just woken him up.
There was only one person who could possibly be sending him a text message this early though, and Takashi found himself grinning a little as he reached for his phone where he’d left it plugged in the night before.
He glanced at the display, and his smile grew a little wider as he confirmed that of course, he had been right. He looked down at the message curiously.
A moment later, Takashi let out a loud laugh, and sank back against his pillow. Sometimes he was convinced that Tuti did things like this on purpose, just to remind him that he’d somehow managed to fall in love with one of the silliest and most ridiculous people he’d ever known.
Tuti answered his return call on the second ring.
“You realize we’re the only two people celebrating today, right?” Takashi’s smile was so wide, he was sure Tuti could hear it in his voice. “Of course you were the first one to wish me a happy anniversary,” he continued. “Who else would possibly call me before you?”
Tuti laughed, and then there was a pause.
“Well, Eiji and Daiki know,” he said finally. “And Kime. I had to send it early, if I wanted to be sure. I can definitely see myself losing to Kime with something like this…”
“It’s not a contest, Tuti. And it’s not even really our anniversary!”
“Sure it is!”
Takashi laughed, still grinning. “You do realize that most people don’t celebrate the day they met, right?”
“Well, we’re not most people. And you know, I never knew you to be one to turn down a present… If you don’t want to celebrate this year that’s fine by me, but…”
“Present?”
Tuti let out a loud laugh. “I knew it! See, you need to stop teasing me if you want to keep getting unexpected gifts from me like this.”
Takashi laughed. “Is that so?”
Tuti made a noise of agreement, and Takashi found that he was grinning even more now.
“Giving me a hard time…” Tuti mumbled on the other end of the line. “You should be thanking me!”
“I think it’s really sweet, okay. You know that,” Takashi confessed. “Thank you.”
“Really?”
“Of course,” Takashi told him sincerely, though he was sure it wasn’t a serious question.
There was a pause, as Tuti fumbled with something on the other end of the line.
“So is it okay if I show up at your place this afternoon, say… 1:00?”
Takashi thought for second, yawning a little. “Ah, no, 1:00’s no good, I have a meeting at the office from 11:00 to 2:00…”
“I thought that had been moved to tonight?”
“Well, it was, but then…”
Takashi sighed now, not because of Tuti’s question, but because he was somehow just realizing what this change of schedule meant for the possibility of him actually seeing Tuti today. He frowned.
“During the day today was the only time Takeda-san was free, so we had to move the location shoot to this afternoon, and from what I heard, it’s a long ride out there, and....” He sighed again, wondering why he could never seem to brush off these little disappointments as quickly as he wanted to. “Sorry,” he finished, feeling his good mood deflate a little more. “It’s probably not possible today.”
“We should have made definite plans, I guess.”
“Yeah… I’m sorry.”
“It’s not your fault. We’d be able to meet this morning if I didn’t have rehearsal, so…”
Takashi nodded to himself, though he knew he was pouting a little. “I’m still sorry,” he said quietly. “We should at least be able to see each other on our anniversary, right?”
Tuti laughed softly. “Weren’t you the one just telling me this wasn’t our anniversary?”
“Hrmph,” Takashi mumbled, and flopped over onto his side.
There were a few moments of silence between them, and Takashi stared at the morning sun as it reflected through the cracks in the blinds and onto his lap. The light moved in thin lines across his thighs where he had kicked off the thin blanket overnight, and the room seemed somehow wrapped up in the grayish-blue haze of color that always seemed to seep in from outside on summer mornings like this.
He listened, and for a few moments he could hear the familiar sounds of Tuti moving around his apartment before there was silence - just the sound of Tuti’s soft breath against his ear, and nothing else.
“Hey,” Takashi whispered. “It’d be bad for you to fall asleep again, right?”
He pictured the other man in his apartment, fully dressed and lying on his back on the futon, bag across his lap. Takashi smiled, and allowed the brightness of the scene to take over his thoughts for a moment. He was surprised by how easy it was to picture Tuti like this. The Tuti in his mind closed his eyes, and let out another breath into the phone against his ear.
“I’m not asleep,” Tuti said softly. “Just thinking…”
“Well, you sound relaxed enough…” Takashi paused, and then asked, when there was no response, “What are you thinking about?”
Tuti laughed a little nervously. “Well…” He paused, and let out a long breath. “Of course I’m thinking about you.”
“Me?” Takashi asked in surprise.
He couldn’t decide if he was actually surprised or not, but… He suspected that he wasn’t, really. The smile on his face widened a little.
“I was thinking about you too,” Takashi admitted. “I was imagining you falling asleep on top of your futon.”
“I haven’t done that in a while…” Tuti laughed. “You’re still in bed?”
“Yeah…” Takashi paused, and blinked up at the window. “You know, if you lie in one spot, and watch the light behind the blinds like this, it looks like something is moving out there… It’s strange. It must be the branches on the other side of the window, or the wind or something.”
“Probably the wind…” Tuti agreed. “You’re still wearing that blue t-shirt I gave you to sleep in, right?” He asked a moment later.
Takashi snickered. “Why don’t you tell me what you’re wearing too then…?”
“I didn’t mean it like that, I was just curious…”
“I know. I’m kidding.” Takashi laughed. “And yeah, I’m wearing the t-shirt. And black boxers,” he added quickly. “Any problems picturing that?” He grinned.
“None at all,” Tuti told him, laughing.
Then Tuti paused for a long moment, and somehow, Takashi realized that the idea of Tuti thinking about him like this was a surprisingly satisfying one. Of course, if Tuti was here, it would be a lot nicer, but… There was something really warm, he decided, about this feeling, and about this closeness.
“I’m sitting on the floor under the window,” Tuti was saying. “I’ve had the blinds open for a while, so it’s starting to get warm. There’s a huge patch of sun across my lap right now - it extends almost past the futon… It’s really bright...”
Takashi listened as Tuti’s train of thought digressed for a moment or two, and he contemplated how hot it would likely be today, and what effect this was going to have on his ability to get to the hall on time, since he was sure now that he need to stop for a cold drink beforehand… and then…
“…CRAP-” Tuti cut himself off suddenly. “Hang on a second.”
Takashi could hear the other man stand up quickly, and his hurried steps as he moved across his apartment echoed a little, even through the phone. Takashi wondered why on earth he was stomping so loudly this early in the morning.
“Mou…” Tuti whined at him a second later. “Takashi… Why didn’t you tell me it was this late already??”
Takashi sighed, smiling a little. “Well, I have the morning off, so...”
Tuti whimpered a little at this, and Takashi could hear him fumbling with his shoes, switching the phone from one ear to the other several times.
“I’ll just talk to you later, okay?” Takashi offered, feeling oddly sympathetic towards Tuti’s never-ending lateness, for once. “You know you’ll move faster after you hang up, right?”
Tuti agreed hurriedly, and after another second, Takashi flipped his phone closed.
He lay on his back, staring at the shadows on the ceiling for a moment before he closed his eyes. In his mind, he could see Tuti fumbling with his keys, shoving them into his bag, and then rushing down the steps from his apartment, as he hurried down the street to the train…
It really did make sense to him, even after four years, to remember this day, Takashi realized. Because without a doubt, something had changed the day that Tuti had entered his life, and it was definitely something he wanted to celebrate. Even if Tuti wasn’t able to be here with him now, they were still connected like this, by this day…
He’d been making Tuti late for various commitments for a long time now too, he figured. He was sure Tuti might feel otherwise, but for his part, Takashi was grateful to have been reminded of one more thing that hadn’t changed in the four years he’d known Tuti.
He sighed, and rolled over, pulling the sheet over his legs as he made himself comfortable again. He was wide awake, and he knew there was no way he’d be sleeping any more this morning, but he closed his eyes anyway.
Tuti was on the train platform now, out-of breath from running up three flights of stairs, and a single bead of sweat clung to the corner of his forehead, just above his ear. Takashi watched as Tuti lifted a long finger to brush it away, before moving forward towards the yellow line at the edge of the platform. Takashi could almost hear the train doors open and close as Tuti pushed his way into the car, and he swore he could practically feel the heat of the bodies around him as several dark-suited businessmen pressed together, forming a wall against Tuti’s left shoulder…
Takashi found himself wondering something though, in the midst of this rather intricately imagined scene. Was Tuti still thinking about him too?
He almost reached for his phone to find out, but then he stopped himself.
There was no way he needed to ask Tuti something like this, after all. Takashi smiled at this realization, and the light from the window danced in the corner of the ceiling above him, silently.
Just a few more minutes like this, he told himself, and closed his eyes.
