“Don’t you ever get tired of singing that song?” Tuti says as Takashi slides into the small karaoke booth next to him, but his eyes are warm, and he squeezes the other man’s knee fondly as he leans over to whisper in his ear, “I remember the first time I heard you sing that song, you know?”
“Oh you do, do you?” Takashi says, but his words are nearly drowned out by the music of the next song starting, so he doesn’t say anything else until much later, until they’re spilling out onto the bright bustling street, pairing off, Miyagawa and Uchida** heading off in the opposite direction, while he and Tuti fall into step to make their way towards the train.
It feels like he’s been singing for hours, but Takashi glances down at his watches and realizes that it’s still relatively early.
He presses his shoulder to Tuti’s, grinning in the semi-darkness, blinking up at the other man.
“So you were saying something about how captivating my singing was?”
Tuti laughs loudly, but doesn’t miss a beat. “Oh yeah, I suppose I was.” He pauses long enough for Takashi to poke him in the ribs sharply and mumble “jerk”, before he decides to just come out with it.
“Yeah, I’d like to think that that song contributed at least a little to, well… this.” He gives Takashi a long, meaningful look and Takashi laughs.
“This?” Takashi grins. “Right.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I should certainly hope so.”
Tuti rolls his eyes. “Yeah, so rest assured, your plan worked.”
“Wait, wait, my plan?” Takashi is staring at him incredulously. “You think I had a plan?”
Tuti is speechless. He stares helplessly for a moment at several of the ridiculous smiley faces on Takashi’s scarf, suddenly unwilling to meet the other man’s eyes. “I…Uh…”
And okay, Takashi is laughing a lot now, and Tuti fights the urge to grab him and shake him, which would of course be excessive, and unacceptable, no matter how much of a jerk Takashi is being about this right now.
Takashi keeps it up for a few minutes before he finally looks up at Tuti, his eyes dark and disarmingly honest.
“Of course I had a plan,” he says, a small, slightly seductive smile on his lips.
“Jerk,” Tuti mutters, not really meaning it anymore.
“I’m really glad it worked too.” Takashi nods to himself, and then says, quietly, “I’m not sure what I would’ve done if it hadn’t.”
Tuti blinks at him for a second, and then shakes his head. “In what world would you staring at me all moony-eyed like that and belting out my favorite song to me not have worked, Takashi.”
Takashi pauses for a moment, considering this, and then grins. “You’re right, it was a pretty idiot-proof plan.”
They pause, caught up in a sea of people before the corner, a red light.
“Also,” Takashi says matter-of-factly, “It wasn’t your favorite song then.”
“Oh, I see. Aren’t we full of ourselves tonight?”
“I’m just saying.”
“Right.”
And it’s in that moment that Tuti realizes that Takashi is probably right, because Takashi is always right, and this is one of many reasons why he’s completely, one-hundred-percent in love with him, still, after what feels like an eternity of being at his side, and this is also why he’d likely move heaven and earth just to be able to hear Takashi sing to him like he did tonight, even if he’s heard the song a million times, and even if Takashi can’t quite hit all the notes because his voice is tired and hoarse, and his allergies are acting up (again).
“Promise me you’ll never stop.”
Takashi looks confused for a second, and then he just shrugs, and smiles and says, “Okay.”
“Do you even know what I mean?” Tuti asks, amused, and a little touched at the same time.
“Does it matter?”
“I suppose not,” Tuti says, grinning, because it’s Takashi, and because suddenly everything feels perfect all over again.
“Right,” Takashi says, smiling, as the light changes, and the sea begins to propel them forward.
