Not that I have that many friends on LJ (I don't, being of a pre-Soc.network generation), but has Facebook pretty much taken over the phenomenon? Could be I'm just totally o.o.t.l.
To a certain extent, yes, but Facebook lends itself to more superficial communication, whereas, LJ is more of an actual journal with social components. FB is short-term stream of consciousness, which seems to be the level of communication many people prefer. For instance, this reply, should it get much longer, wouldn't fit in an FB comment, which restricts interaction to comments of less content. Pithy may be good, but it's not always the best way to expand on a discussion.
