The Unexpected Companion

Caroline sat at a small coffee shop, cup of coffee in hand, looking out the large window that overlooked the main street. Her car sat perched in a perfect location, just to the side of the coffee place, where she could make out the front end of her bumper from her spot at one of the little tables in the café.

She wasn’t much there for the caffeine fix as she was for a day out. After having left Mystic Falls after graduation, she decided to pick one place in every state to stay for a year.

Today: New Orleans, Louisiana.

Damon would probably have made a snide remark had she told him but instead, she went the safer route and sent a text to Elena to let everyone know where she was staying in New Orleans. One of her best friends and now fellow vampire club buddy, Elena sent back a winking emoticon and said to have fun chasing fictional vampires. It wasn’t a secret she loved reading and watching all the romantic supernatural shows out there. After becoming a vampire, she even sheepishly looked to Interview with a Vampire for some semblance of guidance. Considering the only guidance she ever had was from her sire’s brother who had his own problems, she pretty much worked through everything on her own. Tyler had been there, though some of his problems were way different than hers.

After their break up, she had a text or phone call every month, once a month to give her the update that he was alive. He was currently working at a garage with some of his hybrid buddies.

And Caroline…well, she remained being a lone traveler. And it was starting to get to her.

She finished her latte and decided to head out. Grabbing her purse from the table, she walked out back into the chilly February weather.

It wasn’t exactly surprising to find him on the stoop of her apartment building but it was still a little a shock to see him. Klaus had been elusive to track after Mystic Falls became everyone’s past home. Elena and Damon had decided to try Paris. Stefan had mysteriously disappeared after an appearance from Katherine and another odd ball scheme. Jer and Bonnie ended up patching things up and the two headed for the West Coast. But Klaus…no one had any information on him.

Caroline walked up, hesitant. “What are you doing here?”

Holding something in his hand she couldn’t make out, he smiled at her voice then turned his eyes up towards her. “Two years of absence I see hasn’t made the heart grow fonder, did it love?”

She crossed her arms. “It would if the heart had been fond to begin with.”

Klaus gave a faux look of heart and grabbed his chest. “Oh how you wound me, Caroline.”
Trying not to smile, Caroline went for the something that sat in his hands. “What do you have?”

“Ah,” He lifted up for her inspection which she did by leaning in a little to spy a box of charcoal art pencils. At her frown, he led into the explanation without further prodding. “It’s been awhile and my picture is a bit outdated.”

Now Caroline just felt bewildered..and a little flattered. “You came all the way over here just to draw me?”

Klaus simply smiled.

And of course, like an old friend, the irritation at him set in. “Why?”

“Why should I not? You are the perfect muse, after all.”

“Flattery gets you nothing but my suspicion.”

Klaus stood but didn’t move any further. As if he was showing that he posed no threat and made sure to assure of it. Weird. Then again, she noticed he never seemed to pick his words carefully with her. He simply spoke without prior thought. No wall to penetrate. And yet, he almost seemed terrified she would step all over his heart.

Caroline picked the box from his hands and studied it. “And what was your plan if I said no?”

He tipped his head down and rocked on his heels, arms folded behind him. “I was hoping you wouldn’t. I didn’t really want to go in that direction of thought for fear of the possibility.”

She shook her head. But it wasn’t at him. It was at the very big likelihood of her answer. The loneliness must be really playing keep away with her common sense. She sighed. Handing the box back to Klaus, she walked past him and up the steps. Making a show of finding her keys, she didn’t bother looking back to know he was still there. And was he holding his breath? “Hope you like tea. I don’t have any coffee.”

Klaus had started showing up at her apartment more. And surprisingly enough, she started to welcome the company more and more. Eventually, it became a habit of a couple knocks on her door before he announced that he was coming in then did. It was this day, that he opened the door before she could open her mouth to say otherwise and found themselves in a very awkward situation.

Caroline tried not to look nervous as she tugged very nervously to tighten the towel around her also very naked body. “I uh, was running behind and thought I grab a shower before you came...over- before you came over.” Was her face flushing? Could vampires blush? No. So why did it feel that way?

Klaus quickly turned his back to her. “I’m sorry. I should have waited longer for you to answer.”

“It’s not your fault.”

He gave a half humorous laugh. “Well that’s a new one for me.”

Caroline stopped fidgeting with her towel. “I’m going to go put some clothes on.”

When he was sure she’d left, he took a seat on the couch and rubbed a hand down his face. After a few minutes, Caroline came back and joined him on the seat. There was an awkward silence that felt way too heavy to be just about the scene they’d just encountered. “May I ask?”

“What?” Caroline tucked her feet under her as played with the fray of her sweater’s cuffs.

A moment of indecision flashed over Klaus’s face before finally, he shook his head and waved it off. “Never mind. I brought something for you.”

He handed over the gift wrapped in hearts wrapping paper and a white ribbon tied perfectly in the center. Caroline smiled. “What’s this for?” But he simply shrugged. She carefully slid the ribbon off before un-wrapping the gift. Immediately her smile fell from her lips. “Is this a joke?”

Klaus, perplexed, looked at the gift in her hand. “No. I didn’t pick to be a jest to you. Why?”

She put the DVD down and cut a look to him that had him a bit taken a back. She was clearly hurt but he couldn’t fathom why. Her eyes were locked with his, searching for some fragment of falsehood in his claim. When she found none, the hurt seemed to slowly fade and she picked the movie back up. “You really don’t know?”

“Obviously, if I had, I never would have brought it as a gift.” He said apologetically.

“I’m…I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be rude. I just thought you knew…I looked to this for…advice on being a vampire when I was first turned.” She turned the movie towards him and shrugged. “Not to mention, I didn’t mind seeing all the hot vampires in it.” She gave a giggle and then outright laughed at it. “Oh God, I sound like a total idiot.”

He smiled and pulled the movie from her hands. “Well, seeing as how this happens to be a favorite of mine, I guess that makes it a pair.”

Caroline laughed harder. “Wait…you like Interview with a Vampire?”
The amusement became contagious at the sound of her laughter spurred in a very strange feeling in his chest. He…adored her laughter. Strange how it felt to like making someone else happy, foreign even. “The book is a bit more interesting but I have to say, the movie is still a guilty pleasure of mine.” He shuffled it in his hands before eying her. “Shall we?”

She reached for the movie, her fingers sliding over his hand a little longer before opening the case and putting it in the DVD player. “I’ll go make popcorn.”

They were standing in the middle of the kitchen with Klaus hovering over the stove as Caroline hovered just behind him. “What are you doing?”

“Cooking.”

“I see that. But why?”

“While, we only need blood as sustenance we are allowed to use are taste buds for other delicacies, Caroline.”

She lightly smacked his arm then tried to peek over his shoulder. “Yes, I’m aware of that. But what are you cooking is the question.”

“One of the world’s many greatest gifts.”

“And that would be…”

“…pasta, of course.” Klaus finished for her and gave her a huge grin to which earned him a beautiful one back.

It was a strange number of occurrences that led them here. One moment they had been enjoying watching a foreign film and throwing popcorn at the screen when the vampire in the movie died when her phone had dinged with a new message.

Caroline without thinking had asked Klaus to pass her phone to her. He did, but not before catching the name of the person who’d sent the message. Immediately, his mood soured and he went quiet. Caroline didn’t seem to notice until afterwards when she asked him to stay for a drink and he declined.

“Getting late.”

She gave a small chuckle. “That’s never stopped you before.”

He shrugged and grabbed his coat off the back of the sofa. “Never really had a reason to leave before.”

Caroline stopped going towards the kitchen and turned. “And now you do?” When he didn’t answer, clarity lit her eyes as anger simmered in her stomach. “You read the text from Tyler, didn’t you? Wait, what am I saying? Of course you did.” She groaned. Klaus started for the door. “I’m so stupid to think that this was anything else than another scheme.”

“Scheme?” He paused with his hand on the door handle clenched tight. “What scheme are you inferring to dear, as I’ve had a many, in my evil existence.”

She rolled her eyes. “Oh please, like you don’t know what I’m talking about.”

Klaus felt the strain of steel in the handle and released it before it broke. Instead, he stuffed his hands in his pants pocket. “‘Fraid not, love. But please, elaborate for me. Since you seem to know it so well.”

Anger rolled off of the blonde before him as she stormed closer to him. “Simple. You, once again, trying to prove you’re the alpha male and conquer the quest to get in my pants.” Her hands were turning into a claw shape and at any second would come flying at him. He pulled his hands out and crossed his arms, in preparation for what he was about to say.

“Not everything is about trying to shag the pretty blonde.”

Caroline blinked, then threw her arms up. “Right the pretty dumb blonde. Let’s play with Caroline, the twit who still looks for acceptance in all the wrong places.”

She didn’t see it but suddenly Klaus was a very different person. Rage morphed his features as his words were clipped, in precise order so as not to be misheard. “And what world do you honestly believe I would ever waste my time with that type of person? Because I’ve been smitten with a woman who always a beautiful outlook to life and never seems afraid to say what’s on her mind, not a mindless tool.”

And just like that Klaus was across the bridge from villain to hero in her heart. And she hated it. You weren’t supposed to fall for the bad guy. He was no prince or the white knight that had come to save her. Frustrated, she stormed away into her bedroom and found Klaus close behind.

“What are you doing in here?”

“The conversation isn’t over just because you’re flabbergasted with me. If anything, it prolongs one.”
Caroline threw her arms up, though this time in surrender. “Oh really. Then what should follow that kind of punch you just threw.” She shook her head. “I don’t know what to do with you Klau-” Suddenly, they were so close Caroline could see the specks of amber and green in those eyes of his that her knees were kind of getting weak. And did she just give a sigh? Oh God, she was still staring at his face. “What are you doing?”

“This.” He whispered then pulled her to his lips and kissed her. And she let him. Hell, she actually leaned into his caress on her cheek when brushed a hand against her face to deepen the kiss. When they broke apart, he focused on her eyes, reading for any misgivings that he should stop. And when he remained so, Caroline growled at him.

“What are you doing?”

“I-”

She cut him off, “Why did you stop?” And this time pulled him in, her lips tasting his as her hands seized the front of his shirt, holding on.

When a few moments later, they broke apart to get their bearings, Caroline whispered. “We’re just friends.”

Klaus frowned. “Do you do that with all of your friends?”

She frowned then laughed, shaking her head. “No. I meant I’m just friends with Tyler now. There’s nothing between us.”

“Oh.” Klaus reached forward, brushing a strand of blonde silk behind her ear. “So what are we?”

She captured the hand that had played with her hair and held it. When she finally could define it, she lifted her eyes to his and smiled. “More.”

“More.” He spoke in a questioning tone. She nodded.

“More than friends.”

After a moment, Klaus nodded in agreement with that assessment. “Anything with “more” and “you” in the same context is as good as gold to me.”

She smirked. “Well, there is a thing such as more clothes on me.” As if to prove her point, she slid a button loose to reveal a black bra underneath and trailed a finger down to apex of where Klaus’s eyes became trained where skin met lace.

“I love it when you point things out. Shall we fix this error of mine?”

“Well. Since it’s only fair that you actually managed to make me, Caroline Forbes, unable to form a single word in a fight then I suppose.” She shrugged then batted her lashes at him playfully, making him laugh.

“I suppose I should do that more often. Now tell me, is it still true that fights usually lead to great make-up sex?”

ӜӜ

Caroline bit her lip. Her phone glared at her as the body of her message stood blank. What to tell Elena...

After about ten minutes of brainstorming, she sighed and looked up to the ceiling for inspiration when the phone was plucked from her fingers. “Hey! What are you doing?”

Klaus hit a few buttons, and then handed it back to her before heading into the shower. “If I left you in here any longer, I was going to be very lonely in a very cold shower.”

She gave a sarcastic glare at him. “Maybe that’s what you need.”

“With you, I’d need the entire Antarctic Ocean to stave off that kind of desire.” He said then walked into the bathroom in nothing more than a towel wrapped around his waist. Suddenly, she wasn’t caring so much about what he typed and more about following. But still. She glanced down at the text and smiled. Such a Klaus thing to say but summoned up everything she was currently feeling right now.

Enjoying my second life.
