Buffy Meme Day 30!

Thing that made Buffy Great:

Umm, yeah so there are WAY too many things I could say for this so I am going to post the first couple of things that come to mind and anybody else that has been following this can feel free to add their own opinions as to what made this show great.

For me, it's this:

1. The dialogue: This is what got me interested in the first season. This is what set the show apart for me from the likes of "Charmed" or "Dawson's Creek" or any of the other teen oriented shows out there that may or may not have had a supernatural plot to them. This show had such sharp, unique and witty dialogue that books have been written about it. It's not over exaggeration to say that Buffy as a show changed the way we speak in many many ways. Some phrases made popular by the show made it into our modern world seemlessly and without people realizing the origins of them. It was innovative and it was FUNNY.

2. The writing (which I know people might thing goes hand in hand with dialogue,) but when I say the writing what I also mean is the stoylines, the season arcs, the villains, the characters, the one-off episodes. All of this was incredibly exceptional. Even episodes that I didn't care for, or that I considered "bad" were miles better in plot, in characterization and in story than most of hte dreck on tv today.

3. The characters: Almost every single character (with the exception of Riley) was a fully fleshed out character with a unique and distinct personality. This is very difficult to do...especially with teen shows. I didn't love every character, but there was not one single character that didn't have me interested in some way and that's hard to do. And the characters I did love, I loved a lot. I laughed with them, cheered for them, cried with them. I felt everything they felt.

4. The relationships: And I'm not talking about just the romances (though I think the show did those...even the ones I didn't care for, exceptionally well). I mean all teh relationships. The friendships, the paternal relationships, the sense of family and the romantic pairings were all done incredibly well.

5. The mythology: I loved the world that Joss set this show in. I love the way he made his vampires (with the exception of Angel and Spike) soulless and without a grey area. And I also love that he did the exact opposite with his demons. Beings that could go either way. And I loved that even with those rules in place, he continued to break them without losing his mythos all together.

6. Finally, Joss Whedon, the man himself. Genius. Nuff said.
