The ribbons are called "rank slides". You can get them for under $12 plus shipping from the UK on ebay.

thanks. I already kinda knew about the actual rank slides (do you know if the RAF slides would fit an USAF coat?), but as I live in the US many of the auctions don't ship to the US. Plus I wanted to try to make them myself and wanted to know how others have done it.

It should fit, I'm not sure tho, I made mine so I just made the boards to fit it. I'm in the US as well and it cost me like $16 after shipping.

I think they are a standard size or close enough for most garments.

If it helps I've made scale ones using alternating colours of elastic.

They didn't use rank slides in the show, however. They are 8 individually sewn pieces of rank braid. Do an ebay.co.uk search for Flying Officer rank braid. I got 1 meter of braid for under $10 shipped to US, IIRC.
