Places For My Heart To Be
by Laura

Home is where the heart is, the saying goes, and Jack’s heart has been in many different places, with many different beings, both human and alien.

First, there was his family, his blood.

Then a war started, he persuaded his best friend to sign up, and they both went off to fight the enemy. Said enemy captured them, and tortured Jack’s friend, the weaker one of the two of them. His friend died, and the enemy let Jack go. After that, Jack and his bruised and battered heart had to find somewhere else to be, because the army of the Martian Colony wasn’t home, anymore.

He was only eighteen.

Home then became the Time Academy, and eventually the Time Agency itself. Being a Time Agent meant having many other homes, across time and space.

Jack loved his job.

One morning, he woke up with two years of his life missing. This soon meant that neither the Time Agency or the 51st century held Jack’s heart any longer, and he needed another new home.

He was thirty.

This new home was a succession of stolen ships.

Well, some were stolen, some he conned people out of.

A Chula ship was one of the stolen ones. Jack wired some time engines into her (that particular convention still existed) and made his way to 1941. War time was always good for conmen. Home was then a stolen ship, tethered to Big Ben.

In the course of perpetrating one con, Jack forgot about the nanogenes in a Chula war-ship, and narrowly avoided wiping humanity out of existence. But thanks to a man known only as the Doctor, a girl called Rose and his own quick thinking about a bomb, everybody lived. Alas, Jack’s beloved ship did not, and home then became the TARDIS, a fantastic ship which was somehow bigger on the inside than she was on the outside.

He was thirty five.

They travelled across time and space, the three of them. They lived and loved; the Doctor, Rose and the TARDIS held Jack’s heart and this was home. He couldn’t remember being happier.

But as they left 14th century Japan, only just escaping from Kyoto in 1336, a transmat beam took each of them. They ended up in the year 200,100’s versions of 21st century game shows, on the Games Station, formerly known as Satellite Five, fighting for their lives.

They also had to fight their way back to each other. Jack had to face the Daleks for the second time in his life, but he was seventeen years older and a little wiser, and most importantly, he had the Doctor and Rose by his side.

But they ended up leaving him.

Having been inexplicably brought back to life after being killed by a Dalek, Jack had rushed towards the sound of the TARDIS’s engines, only to see his beloved home, and his new family leave.

Jack wondered why he was still alive, if his heart wasn’t there.

He was still thirty five, and he now needed yet another new home, another place for his heart. Jack got himself off the Games Station.

And ended up back in Cardiff, thanks to the Rift.

Jack now calls the Torchwood Three Hub home; has done so for many years. He has no idea what age he really is, but he does know exactly how many people have worked for him. (And died for him.)

Most of his heart is there, but when Jack hears a vworp-vworp noise and sees his last home materialise, he has to go, because the rest of his heart is being kept safe, on the TARDIS.
