If I were asked to describe emos, I'd say they were glum indie kids in black, not goths at all. The similarities are limited to gloominess, eyeliner and a tendency to wear black, and I don't think that is or has ever been the be-all and end-all of goth.
The "two movements, both called emo" thing reminds me of a conversation I had when an undergraduate with a guy who was adamant that he was a punk, but hated the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Buzzcocks, the Fall, the Damned...
Still, no such act of rebranding has been as bizarre, as total or as utterly inexplicable to me as "R&B".

Possibly the only difference is the amount of tears shed during sessions of self loathing. Oh, and the fairly godawful Nobody-Understands-Me-Syndrome which differs from goths in that goths have generally accepted they're misunderstood and don't spend hours on their knees raising their hands to the heavens and weeping while screaming, "WHYYYYYYYY?!" in the rain.
...as an afterthought I'd really like there to be that syndrome medically acknowlaged, then when someone got a bit too dramatic we could say, "Oh he's got the NUMS".
