Prepare your knob for whooshing.

I have become incredibly irritated by the sexism demonstrated by customers. Most often, I work with guys. There are very few ladies that work at my store, and I rarely get to work with any of them. This is fine, I do not mind, and I have rarely had issues with guys having trouble taking orders from me. What do I have issues with is customers that ( Read more... )

Identify Yourself boi_toy4all January 12 2007, 08:16:51 UTC
Perhaps one of the things you should think about is identifying yourself to customers, it has really helped for me. Since I'm the youngest person at my store, people have a hard time believing that I would know anything, other than how to clean the lobby: ie. "Yes, I was planning on putting whipped cream on your grande mocha," "I do realize that I'm putting Whole milk in your grande 2% latte."

One of the things they teach in the new Coffee Master TBT's is to identify yourself. "Hi, my name is... I'm a Coffee Master at this store, so if you you any questions please feel free to ask."

If a customer is looking for a piece then just say politely, "Well, as the Shift Supervisor, I know what's on our orders, and I'm sorry to say, I don't think we have that piece."

Anyways, that's my schpeal...

It's not so much that I have difficulty identifying myself, it's more that customers automatically seek men as authority figures. If the male baristas direct them to me, that's great, but it's really rare that a customer assumes off the bat that I am in charge because I am female.

Difference In North And South boi_toy4all January 12 2007, 16:58:11 UTC
See, if you come up here, people just pretty much assume that.

We have one male Shift Supervisor at our store [hopefully two when i turn 18] and so everyone knows the girls are in charge!

I'm one of four guys now that works at my store.

I have realized more that when I go to Seattle it seems to be more male dominant-population as far as Barista's.

Yeah, during the summer/breaks when all the out-of-town college kids go home, I can work for weeks and never see a female face. Our shift team is even: two guys, two girls, a male SM and a female ASM, but the majority of the rest of the staff is male. I guess part of it also that I'm usually a closer, and most of the ladies work mornings, AND the one day a week that I open, I open with a guy.
