Leave it to Buffy to ask a question like that. Giles thought irritably. "If you must know I have a few things on my mind"
" 'Kay shoot."
Giles took off his glasses and began polishing them. "Why Angel?"
"You mean, why did I chose to see him again even after I found he's a vampire and I'm a Slayer?"
"That was my question, yes." Giles took a sip of tea and waited. Buffy sighed. "I'm not sure how to answer that Giles, I guess it was the whole *bad boy* thing. I should have known better considering the last guy I dated."
"And who was that?"
"His name was Pike, and I'm surprised that Merrick didn't mention him ih his Watcher's Diary."
"Why is that?"
"Well," Buffy smiled, "the first time Pike met Merrick while a bunch of vamps were attacking and it freaked him out so much that he passed out" Slowly the smile faded. "It was that thing with Lothos and my moving to Sunnydale that ended it. I guess he couldn't deal with having a slayer for a girlfriend, not to mention the nightmare that became my life."
"I'm sorry Buffy I certainly didn't mean to pry." But she smiled at him although he could tell it had a bitter-sweet edge to it. "It's okay Giles you deserve to know why I did the things I did." She sighed. "Anything else?"
"Parker?" Rupert asked, although a part of him knew the answer.
Buffy answered anyway. "At first it was a way to deal with the lost of Angel."
"But now?"
"Now, I'll admit it was my way of dealing with Olivia."
Pinching the bridge of his nose, he sighed. "She's an old friend Buffy and was going through a bad breakup and needed some comfort." The look she gave him plainly said; and this involved you giving her one of your shirts?
"All right, I'll admit that letting Liv answer the door wasn't the smartest move I ever made but what's done is done. I have one more pet peve."
"What is it?"
"Riley."
"What about Riley?" Buffy asked with a frown. Giles took a deep breath and blurted it out. "I never liked him."
"What! Why?" Buffy was confused and annoyed with Giles for making her feel that way.
Giles stared at her for a minute then said; "Are you sure you want to know?" He was mocking his Slayer and he knew it. And yet, he didn't care. He was tired of the lies and the secrets. It was time that Buffy knew his true feelings about Angel, Riley and about her.
"Where I should I begin?" He asked Buffy. Unsure how to answer she said nothing.
"Well?"
Well what?" Buffy retorted.
"Where should I begin?" The Watcher repeated. "You chose Angel or Riley?"
Buffy thought for a moment then asked. "Who are you the most jealous of Angel or Riley?"
For Giles the answer was obvious.
"Riley." Buffy smiled. "It seems that you and Angel have something in common after all."
Giles blinked. "And that would be?"
"That you don't like Riley." Giles was speechless. "Um, when did Angel say this?"
"That day we had that big fight with the gang. Does Fort Dix ring any bells?"
For a moment Rupert was unsure what Buffy meant then it clicked. "Bloody Hell." He muttered. "Honestly Spike should have been staked years ago."
"Hey, you were the one who that he might have information on the commandos." Buffy reminded her Watcher.
He winced. "Yes, well now I'm starting to regret that decison. You have no idea what a bother it is to have someone living in your bathroom."
"No, I guess I don't." Buffy laughed. "What do you want me to do with your unwanted houseguest?"
Giles took off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. "It would give me a great deal of pleasure to be rid of that insufferable pillock." He smiled at the sound of his slayer's laughter. "However, he does have information we need. So putting Spike out of both our misery, is for now out of the question."
Buffy pouted. "Spoil my fun." Giles just shook his head and drank his tea in silence, thinking. After a minute or so he asked; "Where were we?"
"Before the Spike bashing? I believe you were about to tell me the many reasons why you dislike my current boyfriend so much. You gotta admit that he's a vast improvement over my last boyfriend." Buffy said refering to the fact that Riley had a paluse.
"That's true." Giles agreed. "And yet that does not give RIley the right to treat you as though you are some helpless woman where you and I both know that is far from the truth." He smiled. When he noticed that she didn't return it, he asked. "What's wrong?"
Buffy sighed, feeling extremely fustrated with herself and life in general. "Giles the last time I tried to be myself with Riley he ended up with a couple of sore ribs." Before her Watcher could reply there was a knock on the door.
This startled the Watcher the only people he knew besides Ethan Rayne and Olivia were the Scoobies and they certainly don't knock. He got up from the couch and went to the umbrella stand. Taking a baseball bat out of the stand he went to the door.
"Hello? Who's there?" He asked. He waited for a moment before he looked in his peephole and opened the door. "Um, Mr. Giles I'm sorry to bother you but it seems that I got your mail by mistake." The lady said holding up a magazine and some bills.
"Oh, thank you Mrs. Reed. I was wondering what had happended to our usual mail man." Giles said as he took the mail from her.
"My guess is that he got the flu or something." Mrs. Reed replied.
"Indeed. Well thanks again, Mrs. Reed." Giles said and gently closed the door. "Sorry about that Buffy."
"It's ok Giles, where you expecting anything important?"
"What? Oh no, it seemed that the postman delivered my mail to the wrong address." Giles answered.
"Cool. So where were we?"
"I believe we were discussing Riley and the trouble you had while sparring. More tea?" He asked while grabbing the cups.
"Yes, please." Buffy replied then got up and started pacing. Giles watched her from behind the counter, worried. "Buffy are you all right?"
"What? Oh it's nothing Watcher-Mine. I just need to move around a bit." Buffy said as she paced the living room.
Giles returned to the living room and sat the tea tray on the coffe table. "So you and Riley were sparring and..?"
"And he said not to hold back, so I didn't." At this statement Giles raised an eyebrow. "Oh?" He handed her a cup. "Buffy I've said before that I don't want to interfere with your relationships, but I feel I should say something."
Buffy waited, saying nothing. Giles took a sip of tea, cleared his throat and began to speak. "I have always felt a man should treat a woman with respect and if for some reason he can't do that then the relationship is over."
Buffy drank her tea and thought about the last few months and about her relationship with both Giles and Riley. Maybe her Watcher had a point. It seemed that she had a decision to make.
"Giles I hate to be rude but I have to go. It seems I have some thinking to do."
"That's fine Buffy. Will I see you for training tomarrow?"
"Sure thing Giles." Buffy smiled.Giles smiled back.
It seems that his slayer was finally growing up.
