Rupert Giles, wizard and Watcher. Buffy Summers, Slayer. Yep, that sums it up. Totally loved the view of the battle and of Buffy and Giles from the Ranger's perspective.
Well, yes, normally I would assume that Giles was more than familiar with Tolkien's various languages - and have used that idea once or twice in other stories. But here I'm taking the approach that Middle Earth is an unknown world to our heroes (to avoid preknowledge of both setting and plot). The Sindarin that Giles 'knows' is part of those memories he's got from Araphor - so he's having to work hard to communicate and will continue to struggle for a while. He probably has a smattering of archiac Westron too - but it's a bit like dropping someone whose native language is German but has vague memories of Middle English and Latin into the wilds of North America and expecting him to speak fluently to the first American he meets. It's a good job Giles'is a good linguist!
I decided not to - it was tempting, but foreknowledge almost made this too easy, and I felt that wasn't the story I wanted to tell. So no LOTR in this version of the Buffy verse alas. Of course, Giles *is* familiar with the source material ... *g*
