I've been meaning to ask you what your living situation was when you were in Germany. Apartment, roommates, what? Did the school help you find it?

Well, I can't be of much help here.

The principal at my school was/is also the head of the Hamburg Jugendweihe, a humanistic organization dedicated to providing non-religious confirmation ceremonies to teens (woohoo, I know). As a result, he had this office, which was basically a room attached to a large apartment, which nobody lives in. I got to live there and just pay for utilities (and a little extra because I felt guilty). So basically I had a two bedroom apartment (with living room and laundry machines) and only paid 125 euros a month.

Other than that though, I'd take any help your school can give you...but don't live with a family. They'll probably drive you nuts.

yeah. i lived with a family once, and, while it was nice and i learned a lot about German family life, my host mother was stricter than anyone else's host mother. other people would stay out all night and their host families did not care. i stayed out all night once and the next morning my host mother was calling my girlfriend's host mother and some other families. i called her at 8 a.m. that morning to let her know where i was and she was really mad.
and i've heard from a fulbrighter who lived in a house with a nosy old couple. i like privacy, so i don't think i am interested in living with other people, unless they are younger than 30.
